Gamecocks open SEC season by beating Auburn, 80-71

South Carolina guard Devan Downey scored 33 points as the Gamecocks beat Auburn 80-71 Saturday.

The Tigers (9-7, 0-1 SEC) were led by Brendon Knox, who scored 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting, helping Auburn dominate the points in the paint but it was not enough to beat the chickens.

South Carolina (10-5, 1-0) shot the ball better from outside and used a smothering defense to harass Auburn's guards and cause some easy baskets.

Great win for Carolina to start SEC play and it seems many of the "other" players stepped up nicely to help Devan get the win. The Cocks still got some work to do to improve their game as the SEC slate only gets tougher but nonetheless it was a good win today.

Next up LSU.

If the Gamecocks can not beat Longwood then who can they beat?

No disrespect to Longwood fans but seriously you guys have only beaten Campbell, Florida Gulf Coast and Virginia-Wise.  This is a game that Carolina should (and must) win.

The Longwood Lancers (3-12) will play the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina beginning at 7 p.m. tonight; it will be televised on Fox Sports South TV.

The Gamecocks are 8-5 and have lost three of their past four games. Carolina needs this game for mental reasons and team chemistry issues before SEC play begins against Auburn in less than a week.  But USC can not look past Longwood as we saw what happens when the Carolina basketball team does that...see Wofford.

Longwood is lead by two good players -

1.  #22 Dana Smith, who averages 15.9 pts, 6.9 rbs and 2.3 asst per game.
2. #04 Antwan Carter, who gets  14.7 pts, 7.1 rbs and leads the team in blocks with 8.

Carolina take note and play those two tight.  On top of improved defense against Longwood let's see some blocking out on the boards and improved free throws.  Want to see other guys step it up tonight and not the Devan Downey show...even though we here at LOHD love him.  Devan spread the ball around and let some of the other guys try their hand at it tonight.

The gamecocks should be able to defend the home turf vs the Lancers tonight and I want to see a 15+ point win.

Longwood 'DYK' - Longwood University is considered to be the "Mother of Sororities," for having the distinction of having more national sororities founded there than any other school, 4.  The following national sororities were founded at Longwood: Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Kappa Delta.

USC Gamecocks Forward Mike Holmes booted from Basketball Team

LOHD always knew there was more to this story (i.e fighting) since his eye injury but it seems due to what Coach Horn describes as "internal matters" that the USC forward has been dismissed from the team today.

Holmes played six games this season, then suffered an eye injury due to “horsing around” at home. Since then Holmes was only seen at women’s basketball games, not attending his own team’s games which we questioned awhile back as being very odd.

Holmes averaged 11 points and 4.8 rebounds a game this season in the team's first six games.  He has a good academic record so he should be able to transfer to another program and continue his career as a ex-gamecock.

We wish him the best and proud of Coach Horn for making what is a tough decision.  The gamecocks were and will be in need of improved inside play.  This is another setback for the gamecocks that had high hopes to start the year.

Gamecocks Archie Out for the Year

News broke today that Dominique Archie will have season ending knee surgery. This comes as a surprise as it was originally diagnosed as just a knee sprain. This also brings up some questions as to weather he will pursue a medical hardship for a 6th season of eligibility. Or will Archie just try to get the knee back to playing shape and try the European market.

After the lose to Wofford on Saturday night Carolina is in need of a player that can step up and fill Archie’s shoes.  Archie averaged 14.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in five games played this season. He is the most versatile player on the Gamecocks roster and he will be a big loss to the team. There is no one player on the team that can rebound, shoot and score the way Archie did prior to his injury. The Gamecocks have not been the same since they lost him.  Hopefully this will motivate some of the younger guys to play hard and make the most of the opportunity to have increased playing time.

Only time will tell what happens this season but all is not lost......or with the injury is the season lost?

Gamecocks Have NO Business Losing to Terriers

First let me say congrats to Wofford.
They outplayed the South Carolina Men's Basketball team especially down the stretch.  They outrebounded Carolina and got to the charity stripe more often.  Basically it boiled down to the fact that the Terriers came to play and SC didn't bring the energy needed to overcome a good Southern Conference team in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Wofford earns first victory against South Carolina since 1939 by the score of 68-61.  Wofford (6-6) played close the whole way, never trailed by more than four points, and surged ahead for good with about 10 minutes remaining. The Terriers held the Gamecocks without a field goal on seven straight possessions down the stretch to pull away.  Wofford outrebounded South Carolina, 43-33, and it was 22-11 on the offensive end.
Carolina could not muster up enough fight to do the little things to get the edge on Wofford.  South Carolina had only three field goals (on nine tries) on its final 18 possessions. One of the buckets was a meaningless 3-pointer in the final seconds by Devan Downey, who led the Gamecocks with 17 points but shot only 5-for-14, including 1-for-5 on 3-pointers, and had five turnovers compared to just one assist.

My hope is that Carolina learns from this and don't blame the loss on being down two starters.  Losing a game like this is not what we want to see every again.  Learn that there are no easy games.  Learn that you have to come hungry for a win every game.  Learn that you must do the little things like box out, dive for the loose balls and make the extra pass.

I ask that the team look in the mirror and remember how a loss like this tastes.  Move on and don't let this hurt worse come Monday night vs Furman.  Realize that now there is work to do to get in the "Big Dance" and get to work.

Gamecocks take on Wofford Today in Men's Hoops

The Gamecocks own a 40-18 series advantage over the Terriers, which includes a 78-61 victory over Wofford in the most recent meeting last season.

The Terriers are 5-6 overall, but they are 2-1 at home. Of their six losses this season, four have come by five or fewer points.   In the recent victory over Navy, Wofford forced 19 turnovers and earned a 20-9 advantage in points from the foul line.  The Terriers are led by Noah Dahlman with 18.3 points and 6 rebounds per game. Dahlman also leads the Southern Conference in scoring.

Wofford’s last win in the series came in 1939 – South Carolina has won 21 straight against the Terriers.

South Carolina has gotten off to a promising start, as seven of the team's nine games have resulted in victory. On Wednesday, the Gamecocks had finally got rolling in the second half in route to a win versus Richmond by a 76-58 final.

Gamecocks should win today vs Woof-ford with balanced scoring and strong defense. Devan and Muldrow should lead the charge today and give Carolina a 14+ pt win.

Gamecocks Darrin Horn to get more Money

Per The State - Coach Horn, who is in the second year of a five-year contract he signed after being hired in April of 2008 is set to get a 300k boost and a possible extenstion.

In his first year, the Gamecocks basketball team went 21-10 (10-6 in the SEC) after consecutive losing years under former coach Dave Odom.  This raise increases Horn’s annual salary to $1.1 million but still leaves him in the lower half of the SEC in coaching salary (i.e. bargin).

Some may question the timing of the raise after one season but I think most who truly follow the program know that they have a good coach at Carolina that is going going to do good things.

Need evidence?  First year team wins 21 games.  First recruiting class is rated in the top 10 by experts.

I stand by my prediction for the season and think the money shelled his way is deserved.
Keep building Mr. Horn.

Gamecocks Basketball takes on Clemson Today

Safe to say the score of this game will be more than 34-17 but the need for a Carolina victory is very similar.

The No. 18 Tigers (6-2) will host rival South Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Littlejohn Coliseum. The South Carolina Gamecocks have a rare opportunity on Sunday afternoon to knock off its first top 25 opponent and get a needed win versus Clemson on the hardcourt after beating them on the football turf. If the Gamecocks are able to travel to Littlejohn Coliseum and sneak away with a victory from the No. 18 Clemson Tigers, Carolina will have handed its bitter enemy what could be its worst weeklong span in history.

The Tigers will face a South Carolina (6-1) team that has been short on bodies early in the season, as senior forward Dominique Archie and junior Mike Holmes have recently fallen out of the lineup.  Archie, who averages 14.4 points and six rebounds per game, is out indefinitely following a knee sprain. Meanwhile, Holmes, who averages 11 points per game, is out following eye injury earlier in the week after breaking a bone in his face.

Look for Devan Downey, as the two-time All-SEC point guard, to step up as he must to lead this team while others are down with injuries.  Devan is averaging 19 points per game to go along with a team-leading 23 assists and 15 steals.  Downey will need a similar performance to what he did last year when he posted a career-high 37 points on the Tigers last year, though South Carolina ultimately fell 98-87 in Columbia.

Last season’s loss was the fifth straight for South Carolina against the Tigers, the past four by an average margin of defeat of more than 15 points.

Horn knows how important it is to beat your rival and look for him to do all he can from the sidelines to will his players to the win.
“I was here for only one of those, so it's hard for me to talk about what's happened throughout the past,” Gamecocks coach Darrin Horn told reporters Friday. “That being said, there's no question we recognize that this is an important game to our fans and to people in this state.
“I don't think there's any doubt that we know it’s important, and we want to win it.”
Wanting to win and doing it are two different things and to get that needed win then Carolina will have to do the following:

1.  Get a Early lead or at least hang tough in the 1st half --- if Carolina can get a early lead it will play mental games with the tigers that recently gave up a 23 point lead in the loss to Illinois.  Gamecocks must keep the game close and not get desperate.
2.  Strong interior play --- CU lives off interior play, getting easy buckets and 2nd chance points.  The Gamecocks will have to play big today and limit easy baskets by boxing out and rotating over to help.
3.  Play as a unit --- Devan will get points but others must step up today.  The gamecocks must out-hustle CU and do all the small things right today to get a 'W'.

I think Carolina can win this game today with a balanced attack and beating the press.  Clemson is still hurting over the last loss and now is the perfect time for the Gamecocks to strike.

'Da Cocks by 6, something like 78-72.

Archie Injury Update

Good news / bad news.... Dominique has a sprained knee and will be out indefinitely. They will re-evaluate at a later date and seems to not be a ACL or MCL issue. The early word is he could be back in time for SEC play.
This is the same kind of injury that guard Brandis Raley-Ross suffered last year, and he returned after missing six nonconference games. This is a killer blow to a gamecock team as before the injury Archie lead the team in scoring and rebounding, now as witnessed in the Miami loss it could create some issues.

Prediction from LOHD on Gamecocks Basketball in 2009-2010

I know the season has started and the Gamecocks Men’s Basketball team sits at 4-0 right now with a chance to win the Charleston Classic with a win over Miami (4-0) tonight. But I have wanted to get out my early season prediction/forecast for about a week now but believe it or not…work got in the way. Enough with the excuses and let’s roll this thing out…

The Gamecocks have much to build from after sharing the SEC East Championship last season and going 21-10. Coach Darrin Horn has seven players returning who started multiple games last season; the biggest upside for the Gamecocks is having quality depth this season. Led by first team all-conference guard Devan Downey and solid frontcourt contributor Dominique Archie, the Gamecocks should improve on their NIT appearance from last season. I go on the record that the 2009-2010 squad will make the NCAA dance this year.

Why you may ask…The reasons I see this happening is because of three reasons.

a. depth

b. tougher schedule

c. leadership

Depth –
Along with Devan and Archie, the Gamecocks have strong additions due to a good first year recruiting effort by Coach Horn that landed Lakeem Jackson, Ramon Galloway, Stephen Spinella, and Johndre Jefferson. These additions will blend nicely to Horn’s crew that has solid proven players in Sam Muldrow, Evka Baniulis, Mike Holmes, and Brandis-Raley Ross. The gamecocks only lost 2 players to graduation. So this team has a good balance of energized newcomers and proven players.

What's Returning?
Points : 77.61 percent (5th—SEC Avg: 73.81 percent)
Rebounds : 87.94 percent (3rd—SEC Avg: 75.80 percent)

Schedule –
What some cried about last year seems to have been corrected this season with the schedule being littered with quality opponents for the 2009-10 season. Games with the likes of Clemson, Boston College, Baylor, Western Kentucky and the Charleston Classic will prepare the Gamecocks to enter the SEC Schedule this season.

Then enter the SEC Schedule which will be much tougher in 2010 due to a improved UK, UF and Vandy just to name a few. Not to mention games v SEC West opponents – Auburn (A), LSU (H), Ole Miss (A), Arkansas (A), Mississippi State (H), Alabama (H).

So the strength of schedule rating will be very high this year.

Leadership –
I already noted that the Gamecocks are returning seven players with quality playing time from last season. Guard Devan Downey is the do it all senior for the Gamecocks, who averaged 19.8 points per game and two steals per game last season. He may be a little slow out the gate thus far in 2009 but the bottom line is the Gamecocks are winning and this is due to his (and Archie’s) leadership.

Evidenced through improved toughness, a “will to win” and heck - improved free throws. I say that the improved FTs are due to experience and eldership (knowing what it takes to win). The South Carolina Gamecocks shot a lowly 64 percent from the charity stripe last season. This number totaled to be the worst in the SEC and it is good to see USC improving in this stat as it is crucial to winning games.

Prediction
I predict another 20+ win season and a good showing in the SEC East race.  I see the gamecocks losing no more than 9 or 10 games this season. Not going to say they will win it like last year but they will not roll-over to teams. The SEC East will prove by season’s end to be one of the toughest divisions (just like in football) and the gamecocks will finish between second and fourth.  Archie and Devan will finish with All-SEC honors.  May even see a Muldrow or Holmes on 3rd team.  I would love to see one of the new guys on the SEC freshman team but not sure if they will take enought shots this season.

One thing is for certain...Unlike last year, the gamecocks will be invited to dance and the season will be looked upon as nice progression upon a promising program with a great young coach, both of which are making traction in the SEC.

thoughts?

Gamecocks Basketball Recruiting Class a Top 10 Class

Just recently, LOHD wrote about the Gamecocks Basketball Recruiting Class that looked at each of the players signing up to be a gamecock baller beginning in 2010-2011.

I failed to mention one of the most amazing things about this class and I feel is not getting enough attention - this 5 member class is ranked #10 in the nation by Scout.com.  Rivals.com has the class at #12.  WOW!

The USC 2010-2011 class is rated the highest class in the SEC by both recruiting sites. I am not sure the last time the gamecocks had a highly ranked class but this is something to get excited about!!! People this is only Coach Horn's second recruiting class and I am sure will prove to be a special class even if you don't buy into "stars" and rankings before they enter collegiate play.  But it is nice to see Carolina up their in the same conversation as Duke, UNC, etc....

Great Job Coach Horn !  And again welcome - Bruce Ellington, Damontre Harris, Brian Richardson, RJ Slawson and Eric Smith.

{PS - look forward also to seeing Malik Cooke play next year.}

USC downs USF and heads to the Championship Game

Don't rub your eyes too hard when you read this statement but the Gamecocks sealed the win with clutch free throws down the stretch.
I know, it is hard to believe since just a short few years ago it seemed the team could not hit free throws if they were paid to do it.  But this is a new crop and they have a great coach in Darrin Horn.  South Carolina now moves to the championship game of the Charleston Classic after downing South Florida 69-66 on Friday night at Carolina First Arena.

What won this game?  South Carolina made 11 of 14 in the last 1:49.  That is what winning teams do.

After a slow start out the gate again for Carolina, they finally got there act together in the second half when they took a 40-38 lead at the 14:36 mark of the second half.  From that point on they never gave up the lead but it was tight the remainder of the game and it took FTs to seal it for Carolina.

USC was aided by Devan Downey, who scored 17 points, and South Carolina senior forward Dominique Archie tallied his 1,000th career point in the victory in route to finishing with 15.

Next up - Miami in the Championship game on Sunday.

Archie leads Gamecocks over Eagles

USC senior forward Dominique Archie recorded a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds Monday night to lead the Gamecocks past Georgia Southern 90-66 at the Colonial Life Arena in Columbia.

The Gamecocks led by just seven points at halftime but scored the first 16 points of the second half to break open the game. Four other Gamecocks scored in double figures. Devan Downey had 14 points and six assists, but he also turned the ball over seven times. He has been slow out of the gate but it is only the second game so I can envision improved play in the coming games.

Biggest thing Carolina must correct is turnovers.  In this game the Gamecocks committed 24 turnovers. The teams combined for 45 turnovers and 48 personal fouls.  Sloppy play will not win in the SEC.

The Gamecocks are now 2-0 and will play LaSalle Thursday night in the first round of the Charleston Classic.

A look at the Gamecocks Basketball Recruiting Class

As we read yesterday - All Gamecock Commitments Have Signed  - and today - Future Signed into Focus -  Horn got his 5 freshman to sign on which is a very good thing.  Keep in mind he will also bring in 1 transfer to come in as a walkon.  Several of the players had offers from other major programs around the country and could be considered one of the best classes the Gamecocks have brought in during the past 20 years.

Eric Smith (5’11 180) (Mullins, SC/Christ School)

Smith became the first commitment of the Horn era on August 28th of last year. He could see time at running the point full time at the college level which will mean he will need to develop more of a pass first mentality.  This guy can create and score but he will have to develop into the floor leader.

R.J. Slawson (6’8 170) (North Charleston, SC/Fort Dorchester)

The long lanky combo forward is rated as the 82nd best player in the ESPN class of 2010. This guy is versatile but will have to add some pounds to play down low.  What sets him apart is his ability to drain a 3 ptr.  I can see RJ getting plenty of PT his freshman year due to how he can create a mis-match.

Bruce Ellington (5’10 175) (Moncks Corner, SC/Berkeley)

Downey will be leaving the program after this year and will be missed.  Enter Mr. Ellington.  Ellington is a stocky built point guard with top of the line speed in the open court and possesses the skills to break down a defense in the half court set. Expect Ellington to make a heavy contribution in the 2010 season and have a chance to earn a starting role at some point.

Brian Richardson (6’4 175) (Wilson, N.C./Greenfield School)

Richardson will come to South Carolina as an underrated prospect who will give the Gamecocks a pure shooter from the outside with the range and accuracy not seen since Jamel Bradley ran the court in the early part of the decade. At 6’4 with a long wing span, Richardson will bring a great dimension on defense as he has good lateral quickness combined with the "lanky-ness" that enables him to cover guards or forwards.

DaMontre Harris (6’9 205) (Fayetteville, N.C./Trinity Christian School)

The gem of the 2010 recruiting class for Horn and the staff.   South Carolina beat out other schools such as Wake Forest, Florida, Connecticut and Maryland for the services of the talented athletic big man. Harris possesses the type of athleticism that will allow him to play at the top in Horn’s full court press over top of the ball or he can be used around the basket as a shot blocker. Expect Harris to step in as a starter his sophomore year due to him needing to improve in certain areas and be the type of athletic big man in the middle that Horn loves to have on his team.

Malik Cooke (6’5 200) (Charlotte, NC/Christ School/University of Nevada)

The sixth man in the 2010 recruiting class will end up being current transfer and walk on Cooke who will practice with the team during the 2009-10 season while being ineligible to play. Most sources believe Cooke will then go on scholarship for the 2010-11 season with two more years of eligibility.

First look at 09-10 Gamecock Basketball Team & Thoughts

This is a repeat post from back in April on the SC basketball team. Thought since the season is kicking off tonight it would be good to re-visit our thoughts...

The 09-10 Gamecock Squad ---

Starters

PG: Downey

Devan is an excellent PG, even if he struggled down the final stretch this year. I believe he was simply worn out by the end of the year. Hopefully next year we can get him more rest. I expect Downey's stats next year to be ~20 PPG, 4.5 AST, 3 STL. I expect him to come back for the 09-10 year. I also expect him to be a contender for SEC POY!

SG: Brandis Raley Ross

Congrats to Brandis for being named the SEC 6th Man of the Year, but I would say he would be a below average starter in the SEC. He's a decent ball handler, but he looks to be in slow motion when on the court. Not explosive at all and not able to create his own shot. Throughout his career he has typically played well in out-of-conference play and then disappeared in SEC play. This changed (to a degree) this season, but he still has the tendency to disappear for games at a time. His biggest attribute is his 3-point shooting; however, his form seems to fluctuate throughout the season. As a result his shooting is very inconsistent. In games this year he seemed to benefit from the occasional defensive breakdown. A 2 guard needs to be able to create his shot or be money from 3 Brandis has not been either of these so their is some work to do. Big area to improve is being a better decision maker on the court.

SF: Dominique Archie

Dominique will most likely provide more of the same: ~11.5 PPG 8 REB. Very athletic and very good defender. By the time he is done next year NBA scouts will be drooling over him. He has worked very hard on his shot all over the court, coach just needs to find a way to keep him in the offense. He is a freak athlete and a wonderful defender that is finally at his natural position. Needs to work on handling the ball. He unfortunately disappears on offense on occasion. However, when he is assertive and aggressive he is a weapon. It has always been very easy to tell how Archie will play in a game: just watch the 1st few minutes and that will tell you all you need to know. Archie is a good SEC player who I see duplicating his All-SEC 2nd Team honors next year. Doesn't need to go to NBA as one more year can help him!

PF: Mike Holmes

Mike is only a soph and I see him continuing to improve. This year he was slightly under 11 PPG and 8 REB. I see those numbers improving to about 13 PPG and 8.5 REB. Foul trouble is a weakness (his flopping does not endear him to the refs). He is a beast and wants to dominate every time out. That does let him get frustrated from time to time. Overall Mike is a very good player (I'd say 3rd team All-SEC this year) and I see him being even better than that in the future.

C: Sam Muldrow

Muldrow showed occasional glimpses of greatness (see UGA game and KY game) but otherwise was very inconsistent. I often question his awareness as far as defensive rebounding and locating defensive players. I also think he needs to be WAY more assertive when rebounding offensively. There is no reason a man of his size should not get some offensive putbacks. He can be a very good shot blocker, but he is no Varnado. Varnado is extremely disciplined and still gets his blocks, while I think Sam gambles on blocks and thus allows some easy baskets. Sam definitely needs to bulk up and just be more assertive on both ends of the court. Many have been very high on Muldrow this year but I still consider him a slightly below average SEC center/forward.

Bench:

Steed: hustles and provides decent depth, but at times he has really been a deficiency on the court (ex. MSU game in SEC tourney). Needs to work this summer on his game.

Evka: an excellent 3-point shooter who does not provide much else. Not much of a creator obviously, but that is ok as we need someone to keep defenses guessing with Devan driving and dishing. Also, he has become a pretty decent rebounder here at the end of the season as it seems he has quit shying away from contact. Unfortunately, despite his nice stroke from behind the arc he cannot create his shot at all. He is strictly a spot up shooter. His lack of speed often makes him unable to get open for a shot. As a result he often provides nothing on offense. On the defensive end his effort has gotten better but he is still a liability. I look to him to improve but to be much like he was this past year next year.

Lakeem Jackson: I am extremely excited about Jackson as he seems to have a very high basketball IQ. He can play the 2 or the 3 and is another great athlete which we need. He will get his dunks in this offense. I like about him the fact that he prides himself on defense. I love a good defender and that will be huge subbing out Archie for another defender. He is able to do a lot on both ends of the court and has shown very good leadership for his high school throughout this season. I think Jackson will eventually be an excellent player for USC and will provide some excitement. In his 1st season I see ~8 PPG 5 REB.

Spinella: It is hard to argue with his 35 PPG in high school. He looks to be significantly more athletic than Evka and could steal his minutes next year. Pure scorer who can shoot and take it to the rack. What I like about him is the fact he is a 6'5 SG. Zam was huge this year but Spinella's size matching up against the Tennessee's of the world will be huge.

Jefferson: Junior college forward Johndre Jefferson should give the team more frontcourt depth. I hear he is a player that knows his role. A Ben Wallace type in that he knows he is not skilled offensively and is a pure shot blocker/rebounder. That is huge for USC as rebounding has hurt us late. Can always use a sold role player to take some minutes off of the bigs as they have a tendency to get in foul trouble. Perhaps he is a Steed with more experience? Just needs to help get easy put backs and rebounds when in.

Galloway: Don't know much about him but we just need a backup who can handle the ball to give Downey a rest here and there. Will hopefully provide much needed depth for Devan. Who knows if he is the future answer at PG until he gets on campus, all I know is what I've read on the forums. Looks to be much less of a scorer than DD.

What this means:

PG: A+
SG: C+
SF: A-
PF: B
C: C+

Bench: solid B....will be much improved next year when thinking about 08-09, both from a production standpoint and from a depth standpoint. Which is good news as you can tell at times we needed a deeper bench and especially during times we got in foul trouble. Seems the new guys also will bring some new energy to go well with the high risk/high reward style of Horn.

I think we can really be successful next year if Holmes/Muldrow elevate their games. I also look to the new guys to add where it counts. This team last year and this upcoming year has potential...we just need it every night. We will certainly have plenty of experience with 3 senior and 2 junior starters. Much improved depth will make us a tournament team in my view for 09-10. I hope we can defend the SEC East Co-Championship but UF/UK/UT will be better next year also....should make for a great SEC season and no more "weak SEC" talk!

Gamecocks Basketball Kicks Off Tonight

I know most are thinking about Ark-Kansas but the South Carolina men’s basketball team is back in action at Colonial Life Arena tonight!  Downey and crew look to get loose and start off a great year with a win.

They kickoff the 2009-2010 campaign with an exhibition against Kentucky Wesleyan at 7 p.m.  This will mark the second consecutive year the Gamecocks have hosted the Panthers for an exhibition game as Devan Downey scored 19 points in last year’s 75-55 win. Kentucky Wesleyan is already 2-1 on the young season winning one game in the Disney West Tip-Off Classic and then defeating Grand Canyon 71-49 on Sunday. They are led by 5’8 senior guard Desmond Stephens who enters the averaging 18 points per game.
