NCAA Investigating Vols, Lane has some explaining to do

Tennessee's recruiting practices are under scrutiny by the NCAA, the New York Times reports, with the focus on recruiting bait pretty ladies recruiting hostesses.

More news on this:  HERE , HERE , HERE

From the Times:

The N.C.A.A. is conducting a wide-ranging investigation into the University of Tennessee’s football recruiting practices, according to interviews with several prospects, their family members and high school administrators. A significant part of the investigation is focused on the use of recruiting hostesses who have become folk heroes on Tennessee Internet message boards for their ability to help lure top recruits. ...

Interviews with multiple recruits and their family members revealed that the N.C.A.A. has strong interest in Tennessee’s use of recruiting hostesses, students who are part of a formal group at the university that hosts all manner of prospective students at campus visits, including athletes. It is not clear whether the university sent the hostesses to visit the football players.

In one case, hostesses traveled nearly 200 miles to attend a high school game in South Carolina in which at least three Tennessee recruits were playing.

Marcus Lattimore, a running back who made an unofficial visit to Tennessee but said he would not enroll there, said multiple Tennessee hostesses attended a game at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., in September. He said they brought signs, including one that read, “Come to Tennessee.”
I am sure this will be fun to watch and I am sure this will aid the Gamecocks on the recruiting trail.

RIP UGA VII

Sad news coming out of Savannah, GA that UGA VII  died of heart failure yesterday.
It’s especially sad because Uga VII was only four years old, just into his prime dog years. He surely had five or six years ahead of him, and many games hanging out in the doghouse on the UGa sidelines. Remember Uga VI, the winningest Uga yet, went on to doggy heaven just recently and now UGA 7...on top of a bad UGa football season....geez!

There will be no mascot on the UGA sidelines this weekend for the Kentucky game. Which is also sad as you know you can never tell what a live mascot is going to do on the sidelines of a game. I think UGA has given us some pretty memorable moments like the time he tried to bite the Auburn player Robert Baker in 1996.

Enjoy that doggy treat up there in doggy heaven from LOHD.  And to all our UGa friends hang in there....

Tennessee's new helmet

I know the UT story is getting a little old, seeing how it only happened yesterday. Unless there is new information on the Prius or the players I will not post anything else about this story. Tennessee might have worn black jersey's against USC on Halloween, but check out what they are wearing this weekend against Ole Miss.

SEC makes move to correct bad officiating

I saw the news flash yesterday come out that the SEC has suspended the offciating crew that worked the Arkansas/ Florida game as well as the LSU/UGA game a couple weeks back. The SEC has been taking a lot of heat from the media about blown calls to keep Alabama and Florida ranked so high in the polls. There are a couple of conspiracy theory's out there. Such as the SEC tells the officials to help the high rank teams if they are having a bad game, so that at the end of the year the SEC will get two teams in the BCS. More money for the league, which is the name of the game.

Thoughts and options on this matter. I personally have always had a problem with the SEC officiating ever since the Alabama game back in 2001 when the referee would call USC "North Carolina" every time a penalty was called on the Gamecocks. No excuse

The SEC has suspended the officiating crew that worked the Arkansas at Florida game Oct. 17, the league announced.

The crew will be removed from its next scheduled assignment, which was on Oct. 31, and will return Nov. 14.

“A series of calls that have occurred during the last several weeks have not been to the standard that we expect from our officiating crews,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said. “I believe our officiating program is the best in the country, however, there are times when these actions must be taken.”

Florida won the game 23-20 on a last-second field goal to remain unbeaten. The Gators also were No. 1 in the first BCS standings.

“While only a few calls have been identified, the entire crew shoulders responsibility for each play,” Slive said. “I have taken this action because there must be accountability in our officiating program. Our institutions expect the highest level of officiating in all of our sports and it is the duty of the conference office to uphold that expectation.”

Welcome the Gator Bowl to the SEC family

Seems the ACC would not budge with what the Gator bowl wanted so they took their football game and when home.  Only to sign up with the SEC.  I say - ACC lost , SEC won...as usual right?

Here is a little summary of how it went down....ACC associate commissioner for football operations Michael Kelly said ACC officials had rejected a proposal by Gator Bowl officials to eliminate the "one-win rule" from the conference's bowl selection process.  That rule states that when a bowl selects its ACC representative, it must choose a team with a conference record that's within one win of the team with the best available ACC record.  In other words, if a team with a 5-3 conference record was available to a bowl, it can select a team with a 4-4 record, but not a team that's 3-5 in the ACC. Kelly said Gator Bowl officials wanted to the freedom to select any bowl-eligible ACC team.

So the Gator Bowl left and ended up joining the SEC where they will likely have the No. 6 pick in the SEC. At the same time, the SEC is ending its ties with the Independence Bowl and moving said team to Jax for the Gator Bowl, which before was reserved previously for the ACC v. Big XII/Big East/Notre Dame. This won’t happen until next season.  But to me this is a welcome change to the bowl slate.
