The Gamecocks are ranked among the top teams in the nation coming in at No. 2 (Collegiate Baseball) No. 3 (ESPN/USA Today Coaches') and No. 12 (Baseball America) in the three major collegiate polls. They proved it today with a win in game 1 of two today against East Carolina. Game 1 score was 22-5.

It is about that time

Well today the College baseball season starts. As most would have predicted, it is pouring rain and no sign of letting up. Granted the ECU match up is one of the best in the country, college basketball still rules the TV world for the next month or so. So if you want to listen to the game online check out 107.5 the game.

With a couple key injurys in the pitching staff, our stacked infield and young out field should pick up the slack scoring some runs.

See you at the Sarge!

I remember the first time I drove thru Indiana

Cheaters never win, or so they say. Well Indiana has just fired there head basketball coach Kelvin Sampson. Or so this is the rumor leaked out on fox sports at 3 o'clock today. What will happen to this program, probation, miss the NCAA tournament?

who is voting on this

I think I have done a pretty good job of making my way around the SEC to see away games, and I would have to say LSU has the worst fans. Well there is a only poll, and it has South Carolina leading by a large margin for worst fans in the SEC. Any thoughts on this topic?

Boyd trying to make his mark

Ex-University of South Carolina tailback Cory Boyd, who led the Gamecocks in rushing and second in receiving, will take part in the NFL Combine.

The 6-foot-1, 218-pound Boyd was the only Gamecock player invited to the combine Feb. 20-26. Thirteen players with South Carolina ties will take part in this week’s combine. Other notable names are Clemson’s Phillip Merling, Rafeal Little at UK, former Rock Hill standout Jonathan Hefney who plays for Tenn and a great running back for the mighty purple paladians by the name of Jerome Felton, not to mention this guy from Newberry -Benedict.

Boyd is projected to be picked around the fifth round in the NFL draft.

Boyd rushed for 903 yards and nine touchdowns this season and also had 36 receptions for 405 yards and one TD. He graduated in December with a degree in hospitality management. The guys at the LOHD wish him well this week!

No Fan of Ron Morris Here

Is it just me or does this type of article piss you off too? I mean come on Ron can you write about the gamecocks in a positive light? The State paper should help USC not hurt it or tick off the fans; heck we already have one paper in the state that has the view of clemson being the best thing since Mary gave birth to Jesus and they glorify clemson in all they do and never write negative about them but love some bad press about Carolina......I know the job of the media is to report facts but Mr. Morris is killing me with his weekly 'bad mouthing or salt on the wounds' style of writings about USC.

Cooper not going to UNC

The 46-year-old Cooper and recruiting coordinator David Reaves will remain the lone holdovers from the Lou Holtz era on Steve Spurrier’s staff now that Cooper isn't going north.

USC’s secondary coach interviewed last week for the defensive coordinator’s post at North Carolina; but the Tar Heels hired Minnesota defensive coordinator Everett Withers. This is good news for a change.

USC player charged

From AP reports --- Police say University of South Carolina receiver Dion Lecorn was charged with simple possession of marijuana. LeCorn, 19, was arrested Sunday evening around 9 p.m. in a parking lot at Riverside Estates Apartments in Cayce. Authorities say LeCorn, 19-year-old USC wide receiver Matthew Clements, and another man, 18-year-old John Casselberry, were detained after authorities responded to a call of loud music from their car. Officers say they smelled marijuana inside. Investigators say LeCorn told them he had purchased the marijuana from an individual at the Five Points Food Lion. LeCorn was the one driving the vehicle. Officers say the men admitted to using marijuana.

According to the police report, Clements is wanted by authorities in Florida for a failure to appear bench warrant. He will not be extradited to Florida, neither he nor Castleberry were charged in Sunday night's incident. LeCorn was released on a public recognizance bond. USC Athletics Department Spokesperson Steve Fink school policy is that athletes are suspended following an arrest.

So what kind of punishment should they get? I mean look at what UT did with Sunday's arrest, for the fifth alcohol-related incident, involving Colquitt.

Sparky finds a Home

Before Woods was hired last week, USC had been the last college head-coaching stop for the Gamecocks’ previous 10 coaches, beginning with Rex Enright in 1955 and continuing through Lou Holtz 50 years later.

Enright and Holtz were the only two who retired. Joe Morrison died of a heart attack on Feb. 5, 1989, after playing racquetball at Williams-Brice Stadium. The other seven coaches either were fired or resigned under pressure.

Woods takes over a VMI program that has not had a winning season since 1981 and went 2-9 last year. Woods, who will be introduced at VMI on Friday, agreed to a five-year deal with an annual base salary of $122,000, according to The Roanoke Times.
