A renewed push for a playoff system...

No matter what side of the fence you land on concerning the BCS debate it is interesting to notice the most recent 'push' that is set to begin on this ongoing saga - BCS or playoff system.

I wrote about this some time ago - here - and do feel something needs to change, whether it is a playoff system or a plus one game. Anyway....there is a new hope for those who want to see the BCS system end and it is due to UGA feeling slighted by the "system." UGA President Dr. Adams is going to begin to raise the issue - read more HERE.

What do you think should happen - Should the BCS be scrapped for a playoff system or is UGA just the newest set of crybabies?

NEW ORLEANS – Tuesday was supposed to be a day of celebration for LSU and the Southeastern Conference.

Slive is disappointed in the timing of Michael Adams comments
However, Georgia president Michael Adams attempted to steal the spotlight with his published comments Tuesday on the need for a NCAA-sponsored eight-team football playoff.

Adams' Bulldogs football team finished fourth in the BCS standings and had to settle for playing in the Sugar Bowl. Georgia pounded Hawaii and ended No. 2 in the Associated Press rankings and No. 3 in the USA Today coaches rankings.

SEC commissioner and outgoing BCS coordinator Mike Slive was unhappy with the timing of Adams' remarks.

"I am disappointed that Dr. Adams made those comments today," said Slive, following LSU coach Les Miles' press conference Tuesday morning. "I knew (Adams) was concerned about what happened during the (BCS) selection.

"But, this is LSU's day. This is a great day for the SEC, a great day of celebration. Obviously, the First Amendment is alive and well in the SEC. Dr. Adams will have the opportunity to have his day. I thought coach Miles addressed it directly."

Georgia completed the season on a seven-game winning streak. LSU jumped over the Bulldogs in the final BCS standings. However, Georgia failed to even qualify for the SEC title game since it lost its head-to-head matchup against Tennessee.

Last season, LSU closed on a seven-game winning streak. But, the Tigers didn't win the Western Division. LSU accepted a bid to the Sugar Bowl where it easily handled Notre Dame.

"A year ago we finished pretty strong," Miles said. "We would have fared pretty well in an eight-team playoff. But, we didn't say anything. It's all about this (BCS title) game. Whatever the rules call for is fine with me."

SEC presidents and chancellors met last spring in Destin, Fla. There was no desire for a playoff. Slive was asked to look into a different format – preferably the plus-1 setup.

In that model, there would be two semifinal games followed by a championship contest. The two semifinal contests would be part of the current BCS bowls.

"The season of discussion has begun," Slive said. "Our presidents continue to talk about playoffs. But, last spring, they were thoroughly against a playoff. Certainly up to now, there hasn't been any sentiment by any conference to have a playoff.

"There isn't much sentiment for a move to a plus-1 much less a playoff. Having a (NCAA-sponsored) playoff is a complex matter. All these relationships are very complex. There is a matrix of issues."

Slive indicated Tuesday that he is not sold on a playoff system in college football.

"I've always been very concerned about a playoff," Slive said. "We need to keep football a one semester sport. The regular season is so critical to the game. The season is long. After (Monday) night, people didn't want to play any more."
