USC loses to Vandy

Well 1st place in the SEC East by ourselves was sweet while it lasted and now it is back to earning it. Vandy made USC look ugly tonight. Vandy seemed to want the game more as USC seemed a step slow in everything. Nothing went right for Carolina. They could build a house with all the bricks they were putting up from 3 ball land.

The shots were not falling from any direction, SC got in foul trouble with Muldrow and Holmes and all the calls were not going in SC favor. Vandy's Center AJ Oqivly had his way with Carolina and J Beal had too many wide open looks. Both set career highs tonight. Just a ugly game on offense and defense for Carolina. USC shot 9-35 from behind the arch and only attempted 9 FTs; not to mention 9 assists for the entire game....come on....this was a piss poor performance. Vandy was 26-35 at the free throw line!!!!!!

This does not make sense....
Vandy took 35 FT attempts to USC's 9.
USC was 9-35 from 3 land while Vandy was 8-16.
USC was 34-81 shooting while Vandy was 31-50

Time for Horn to chew them out some and get ready for UT and the dawgs. The East can still be won but now we have ourselves a 3 way tie for 1st in the East with Florida and UT.

USC Baseball beats Clemson

Game 1 of the 4 game series goes to the Gamecocks! I tired to keep you updated HERE with a live thread.

Game 1 got played today finally after a rain delay. It was a great match up with USC getting a early 1-0 lead that stood until the bottom of the 6th when CU hit a HR to make it 1-1. It was pretty much back and forth after that until USC escaped a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the 7th. Farotto came in with 1 out and bases loaded...but a double play ended the tiger rally. That was a key part of the game. Then USC finally woke up in the top of the 9th when D Mack came to the plate and crushed a HR. Then some singles got the lead to 3-1.

Dyson was strong again today and USC RP Farotto stepped up big time to get the crucial outs down the stretch. Farotto gets the win.

LOHD Players of the Game - D MACK with his HR to give the Cocks the lead in the 9th and Farotto with his great late inning pitching

Gamecocks won by the score of 3-1. SC still with no loses but CU has their first. That makes 5 straight wins for USC over CU. Go cocks as they knock off a top 25 team!

1st Place Gamecocks take on Vandy

USC controls their fate as it is simple...just win. The road to finish first in the East goes through Nashville tonight with a 9pm tipoff. South Carolina (20-6, 9-4 SEC) take on the Commodores who has a 16-11 overall record, including a 5-8 mark in SEC play.

Carolina holds a slight 22-21 edge in the all-time series between the two schools. The Commodores hold a 12-9 edge in games played in Nashville.

The gamecocks must contain the Vandy center who has stepped up his play recently. They can not allow A.J. Ogilvy to have a big game tonight. The gamecocks must box him out and I hope to see just as many blocks in this game like the cocks had in the UK win. The gamecocks must avoid foul trouble, limit TOs and play both good interior D and perimeter D. USC must keep the Vandy duo of Jermain Beal and Jeff Taylor in check also and not let them get hot from beyond the arch.

For the gamecocks on offense they must continue what they have done all season. Play as a unit, distribute the scoring load, make some 3's and create opportunities by playing high energy D.

USC v Clemson in Baseball

Well the big question is will they play the weekend series as the weather is wet today and tomorrow a chance of snow in columbia.

Baseball pregame: USC vs. Clemson

If they do play on Sunday, I will be attending the game and hope the USC can again sweep the series like they did in 2008. Carolina has won seven of the last eight games played between the two schools as well as a 21-15 edge in games played in the last nine years. Tanner is 23-20 all-time vs. Clemson.

South Carolina (3-0) and Clemson (4-0) renew one of college baseball's greatest rivalries and it is always great play on the diamond. Clemson is ranked in top 25 and I feel USC is getting no love b/c of their youth. I feel Carolina has something to prove this weekend!

Game 1 Pitcher 09 Stats
SC Sam Dyson (RHP, So.) - 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 5.0 IP, 2 BB, 6 K
CU Trey Delk (RHP, Sr.) - 1-0, 1.69 ERA, 5.1 IP, 1 BB, 5 K

Game 2 Pitcher 09 Stats
SC Nolan Belcher (LHP, Fr.) - 0-0, 2.25 ERA, 4.0 IP, 4 BB, 4 K
CU Chris Dwyer (LHP, Fr.) - 1-0, 0.00 ERA, 6.2 IP, 1 BB, 9 K

Here are the starting lineups:
USC:
Bradley - 9
Merrifield - 8
Jones - 3
Bangs - DH
Mack - 7
Crisp - 5
Dalles - 2

Clemson:
A. Johnson - 8
Freeman - 4
Paulsen - 3
Parker - 9
Boyd - 7
Schaus - DH
Miller - 6
Nester - 2
Sanders - 5

Carolina will need to continue their strong play with not only good pitching from Dyson but hot bats. I hope Whit Merrifield, Jackie Bradley, Jr., Justin Dalles and DeAngelo Mack come hungry. I would love to see a shut out but let's just get those 'Ws'!

"We Put the Cats Out" Victory T-Shirt

Not sure about this....

My only knock on Gamecock Darrin Horn is...

USC Men's Basketball Coach Darrin Horn needs to wear more garnet and black!
All season he has not really incorporated the team colors into his wardrobe but he really needs to. Heck, he is asking the garnet army to wear tie-dyed garnet/black/grey shirts...the least he could do is wear a garnet tie or a gamecock lapel pen! I not saying he has to wear a garnet sport coat as that should wait until next season when he is more established but what I do want him to do incorporate some school pride in his suits.

Don't take this the wrong way Darrin or gamecock nation, I feel he has done one heck of a coaching job this year and is right now my leading candidate for SEC Coach of the year {but Coach Johnson at LSU may get it this year}.
Win the SEC East your first season and gamecock nation will forever love you...just wear some garnet and black in doing it.

Battle for the SEC East - USC v UK

Rematch time!!! Oh is it going to be a good one..... Remember USC won by 1 earlier and here is the video. Well the wildcats will be making there way down to Columbia seeking revenge and seeking to stay in the hunt for the SEC East crown.

The Gamecock men's basketball team led by first year Coach Horn (19-6, 8-4 SEC) will host the Kentucky Wildcats (19-8, 8-4) at Colonial Life Arena Wednesday with a 7pm start time. This will be the 50th meeting between the 2 teams and UK has a slight advantage with a 41-8 record but I feel we are catching up........South Carolina currently owns a six-game home SEC win streak and have been 15-1 this season at home. So Garnet Army you will be needed tonight and the LOHD voters named you recently "6th man" so showtime!

What is at stake? 1st place in the SEC East and with this remaining schedule of
2/28/09 at Vanderbilt
03/05/09 vs. Tennessee
03/07/09 at Georgia

a win is very much needed tonight. The good part is USC controls their destiny and that is how you want it to be in late February.

Whats we gots to do to win? Simple...just slow Meeks and don't let Patterson hurt us. They get 25ppg and 17ppg respectively so man up on those kids. Well, let's take this a step further in analyzing what carolina must do to win.....
  1. USC must control the ball and eliminate TOs. Glimpses of sloppy play from SC lately and time to play smart.
  2. Box out. UK has some length and USC must do some Bball 101 by boxing out to get position. Don't have to win the boards but no easy baskets and hold their own.
  3. Limit stupid fouls. USC is in no position to get into foul trouble like in the MSU game.
  4. USC must step up on perimeter D....don't let Meeks and Co have a field day outside the arch.
  5. Lights out D....for 40 mins Carolina must bring the D....40 mins of hell that is.
  6. Intensity.....need the fans to be in it and the team must play above the rim, play with heart, no fear yet play smart basketball.
  7. USC scoring has to be spread out.....UK will focus in on slowing Devan, no stopping him, so Zam / Archie / Muldrow / Holmes have to bring their "A game" and pick up the scoring load. Not even that the other 4 must play as a unit and get to the basket.
Go Cocks! Me thinks SC by 4.

Gamecock Downey named to Naismith watch list

USC PG Devan Downey has been named one of 30 players to the 2009 Naismith Men's Mid-Season Candidates.

Congrats and much deserved!!!

Gamecocks Junior Day Re-Cap

So the gamecocks held their annual junior day this past Saturday. This is fresh off the ink drying on signing the #11 class in the nation. USC attracted over 150 junior football prospects to campus Saturday, which is said to be one of the largest JR days ever for Carolina. Spurrier has gone on the record that he is not giving up and it shows that they are hard at work with 2 2010 commits and over 20 offers already.

Let's review the 2010 recuriting as it stands -

2 commitments from...
DT Kelcy Quarles (6-4, 245) from Greenwood, sc
WR Sean Tapley (6-0, 175) from Jacksonville

The offer list as of 2/24/09...
RB Marcus Lattimore
RB Mack Brown
RB Quentin Darby
FB Maurice Hagens
DE JR Ferguson
WR Tai-ler Jones
DE Cory Lemonier
DE Dexter Morant

OL JaWuan James
OL TJ Leifheit
OL Max Garcia
OL Eric Mack
OL AJ Cann
OL Brent Benedict
OL Kolton Houston
QB Nick Montana

The Gamecocks did not pick up any commitments Saturday and no word yet.

Spurrier says Game On!

On ajc.com today ...

Good news Gamecock Nation the rumors we always hear are yet again squashed as Connor Shaw gives us some insight. Over the weekend at the JR days, the Top QB Prospect had this to say....

"I always hear these rumors, just like everybody else, that Coach Spurrier is going to retire in two years, so I asked him about it,” Shaw said. “He [Spurrier] told me ’I'm definitely staying until we accomplish more things at South Carolina … [and] I’m nowhere near retiring."

He also had this to say which I found interesting ...

"South Carolina is bringing in a little more of shotgun offense with a zone read, and [Spurrier] said that I would pretty much be a perfect fit for that system."

USC Baseball Sweeps the Dukes

USC sweeps the weekend and improves to 3-0 as they made easy work of Dusquene.

The Gamecocks got an 8-4 victory on Sunday in front of 4,617. Then today got a 6-0 win for the sweep.

D Mack is the man as he hit a 3 run homer today.

The Gamecocks still didn't receive enough votes to qualify for Collegiate Baseball's Top 30 this week....bullsh*t.....

Next up the weekend series with Clemson!

SportSouth to Televise Eight South Carolina Baseball Games

The games are -

March 22 – LSU @ South Carolina
April 18 – Auburn @ South Carolina
May 1 – Vanderbilt @ South Carolina
May 2 – Vanderbilt @ South Carolina
May 3 – Vanderbilt @ South Carolina
May 14 – Georgia @ South Carolina
May 15 – Georgia @ South Carolina
May 16 – Georgia @ South Carolina

In addition to the eight games on SportSouth, FOX Sports Carolinas will televise the Gamecocks’ game at Florida on April 25 at 4 p.m. ET and five games, including the conference championship, from the SEC Baseball Tournament in Hoover, Alabama.

NCAA Bracket says....USC a #11 seed

ESPN's Joe Lunardi has issued his Monday bracket that projects South Carolina as a No. 11 seed. In Lunardi's scenario, USC would face Syracuse in the first round, then most likely Duke.

Andy Glockner of SI.com, places USC as a No. 8 seed and facing Texas in the first round, then likely UNC. I don't like this scenario as we would have fits matching up to Texas (see OU win).

I feel bottom line the gamecocks must continue to win and no let downs. Have to improve the ways we win as the Ark game was ugly and the MSU game aslo was ugly and should have won. Ball control, improved shot selection and better perimeter D is a must.

Last 4 regular season games are -

02/25/09 vs. Kentucky
02/28/09 at Vanderbilt
03/05/09 vs. Tennessee
03/07/09 at Georgia

No worse than 2-2 but really think we must go 3-1 to finish strong as there are doubters out there. Thoughts?

SEC Basketball Power Poll / Roundtable Bragging Moment

Just got to say that being part of the SEC Power Poll (for both basketball and football) is a lot of fun and LOHD is proud to be a part of it.

We must pause for a minute to take in the fact that our little piece of the college sports world was featured on 2/20/09 in the NY Times College Sports Blog - HERE.

That is right kids the NY Times.....all of us bloggers that are part of the SEC Power Basketball Poll need to brag for a moment.
Big thanks to the boys at Garnet and Black for all they do!

Those blogs that conduct the SEC Basketball Power Poll are -

Gamecocks at NFL Combine/ Cook Injured

Here are the Gamecock players participating at the NFL Combine which goes on until the 24th of Feb -
The Gamecocks are tied for ninth in terms of representation (along with Cal, Cincinnati, Clemson, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Ole Miss and Tennessee). The other USC has the most at the event with 11.

Joe Person also has some coverage HERE. He reports how Jamon and J Cook had a great showing recently.

USC OL JAMON MEREDITH: South Carolina’s starting left guard for 2008, Meredith, was near the top among his position in the 40. The USC graduate posted a 4.97, good for second among offensive linemen, after weighing in at 6-foot-4½, 304 pounds earlier in the week. Meredith also bench pressed 225 pounds 31 times on Saturday, putting him ninth among offensive linemen, and he was among the top 10 in broad jump (8-9).

USC TE J COOK: Injured his Quad muscle in his second attempt at the 40 yd dash. His 1st attempt was a 4.5 --- fastest among the tight ends and faster than last year’s quickest tight end, Dustin Keller, who was selected 30th overall by the New York Jets.

USC WR McKINLEY: Ran a 4.44 in the 40 and finished second among WRs in the 20 yr shuttle with a 4.1

Gamecocks fight off the Hogs 82-78

The Gamecocks (19-6, 8-4 Southeastern Conference) had to go to overtime, but beat lowly Arkansas 82-78 on Saturday night. But heck it is a WIN and USC remains in the hunt for the SEC East crown.

Thank goodness for Devan who made all four of his free throws in the final 15 seconds of overtime to help secure the win.

Quote of the day - “I guess we’re not going to be boring,” South Carolina coach Darrin Horn said after the game.

Geez...got that right but a W is a W.

The Gamecocks remain in a tie on top of the SEC East with Florida and Kentucky. The Wildcats come to Columbia Wednesday, as the Gamecocks will try to sweep them for only the second time since joining the SEC in 1991.

South Carolina is now guaranteed to finish at least .500 in the SEC for only the second time in past 11 seasons. The Gamecocks haven’t had a winning conference record since 1998. They also stay on track for their first bid to the NCAA tournament since 2004.

What to work on before the next game?

TURNOVERS! Stop it...25 in the Ark win and 16 in the MSU win. Come on...play smarter basketball!
