Powell down -- Former University of South Carolina catcher Landon Powell has suffered a season-ending injury to his anterior cruciate ligament, according to RiverCats.com, Web site of the Oakland A’s AAA affiliate in Sacramento, Calif. Powell, who suffered a similar injury two years ago and missed an entire season, had recently been promoted to Sacramento from AA Midland. At Midland, he hit .292 with 11 homers and 39 RBI in 62 games. He had played four games at Sacramento, batting .294 with solo home runs in each of his first three games.
Melillo on sidelines -- Powell’s teammate at Sacramento and former USC teammate, Kevin Melillo, has been placed on the disabled list retroactive to July 3 with a sprained right wrist, according to RiverCats.com. Melillo had aggravated his already sore wrist on Monday, the Web site said. Melillo has been with Sacramento most of the season, batting .266 with 8 homers, 45 runs batted in and 6 stolen bases. He also was called for one appearance with Oakland, drawing a walk in a pinch-hit role before being returned to Sacramento.
McBeth demoted -- Cincinnati Reds pitcher Marcus McBeth, a Woodruff native and former University of South Carolina outfielder, has been optioned to AAA Louisville. The right-handed reliever had a 2-2 record and a 7.59 earned-run average in 10 innings over 12 appearances.
