Gamecock Golf

Gamecock golf moved into a tie for 13th yesterday at the NCAA championship. Today is the final round before the field is cut from 30 to 15 before playing the final round. So hopefully we can hold the 13th spot, then make a run to win our first national championship in golf.

The University of South Carolina men's golf team moved into a tie for 13th place at the NCAA Championship after shooting a team score of 278 in Thursday's second round at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club's Gold Course (Par 70 - 6,803 yards). Sophomore Mark Silvers fired a career-low round of 66 (-4) today to lead the Gamecocks.

Silvers collected six birdies, including three straight on holes five, six and seven, and moved into a tie for 23rd on the individual leader board. The Savannah, Ga., native has a total score of 74-66=140 (E) to pace South Carolina.

The Gamecocks sport a two-day score of 291-278=569 (+9) after finishing Thursday's round at two strokes under par. Carolina is currently tied with fellow SEC squad Vanderbilt in 13th place. Stanford (-7) maintained its position atop the team leader board while Minnesota is one stroke back in second place.

South Carolina junior Warren Thomas (Columbia) finished his round today under par, adding a 69 (-1) to Wednesday's 73. Thomas and freshman George Bryan IV (Chapin) own a share of 44th place. Bryan has a two-day score of 70-72=142 (+2). Junior Mark Anderson (Beaufort) knocked three strokes off his first round total Thursday with a one-over par 71. Anderson is tied for 91st with rounds of 74-71=145 (+5) while sophomore Florian Fritsch (Munich, Germany) repeated his opening round 76 and sits in a tie for 144th.

At the conclusion of Friday's third round, the 30-team field will be cut in half for a fourth final round set to be played on Saturday. South Carolina teed off at 8:35 a.m. The Gamecocks will play with Vanderbilt and Michigan State, the 15th place team.
