what is going on in the big 10

By Jack Carey, USA TODAY

Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema isn't a fan of college football's new speed-up-the-game rule that mandates the clock starts when a ball is kicked off rather than when it's received. But if Bielema can use the rule to his team's advantage, he will, and that's just what he did Saturday against Penn State. With Wisconsin having just gone ahead 10-3, Bielema, 36, twice had his team intentionally go offside on kickoffs in the last 23 seconds of the first half, minimizing Penn State's chances to score. The two penalized kicks took 19 seconds off the clock and left Penn State coach Joe Paterno, 79, livid and complaining to officials.

My opinion on those kickoffs is slightly different from the USA Today reporter's. I would say that Bielema found a way to show the NCAA why the new rule is flawed and was able to do so without damage to his team. I will say he definitely took advantage of the situation, however, the NCAA should be saying, "Point Taken."

crummy even though you have a law degree, let me share with you what my 10th grade english teacher told me... he said you don't need to say things like my opinion or i think when writing a comment on something. Because you are the one make the statment it is already understood that your statement is indeed your opinion or your thought... thats all...

My opinion is that rules of the English language created by lowly 10th grade English teachers as a collective whole (yeah, a bit redundant) are worthless. I have spent my educational life trying to show how unimportant it is to follow those stupid rules. The main reason you would use a rule like that is when you are writing a paper (or dare I say "essay") for such an English teacher. Also, I once had a teacher tell me that when you end a quote, the quotation marks come before the punctuation (i.e., period, comma, etc.), however, I learned as a post-graduate student that the teacher had it backwards. Thank you very much Mrs. Rhame.

Oh yeah, missed this point earlier: it is my guess that the same 10th grade English teacher suggested that you proofread your writing...just a suggestion of my own. ;)

JR

Did you have Mr. Forest in 10th grade English?

That guy was crazy, riding his bike every where. +

Northwestern is the Harvard of high schools. USA Today reported back in July of 2003.

Northwestern loses to female place kickers. That makes it the Carolina of high schools. Damn reports that!

Frankly, I find these comments to be vague.. which is the vaguest criticism you can receive from an English teacher.
