A Friday "DYK" ...

I noticed the flags still at half-staff on many buildings (including where I work) and had two questions concerning this.

1. When a president of the United States dies, how long should someone continue to fly the American flag at half-staff? 2. When does the official mourning period end for former President Gerald Ford?

Answers---The U.S. Code states that the flag shall be flown at half-staff 30 days from the death of the president or a former president. So the official mourning period for President Ford — who died Dec. 26 — will end Jan. 25.
The code also states that the flag shall be flown at half-staff 10 days from the day of death of the vice president, the chief justice or a retired U.S. chief justice, or the speaker of the House of Representatives.
It is to fly at half-staff from the day of death until the burial of an associate justice of the Supreme Court, a secretary of an executive or military department, a former vice president or the governor of a state.
The flag should fly at half-staff on the day of death and the following day for a member of Congress. Note that while the US code is the clear authority for flag display and is followed by most federal and state institutions, it generally is not legally binding to individual flag owners or businesses.

Alright we are down to the 'final four' going into this weekend. This is when it is not so terrible to watch NFL games. I open it up to you guys....who will win this weekend?

Could this spell the end to the Byrnes H.S. dynasty? Will B Martin be able to swallow this recent news? No Korn to guide them and now this…..Bobby Bentley is to be the next coach at PC.

The Spartanburg paper said late Monday night that the Byrnes football coach has accepted the same position at Presbyterian College. A news conference is tentatively set for Wednesday morning on the Clinton campus, where Bentley will be announced as the head coach.

The job was vacated by Tommy Spangler earlier this month, as he took a defensive coordinator's position at Louisiana Tech.

Bentley has spent his entire coaching career at Byrnes and led the Rebels to four state championships. He has compiled a 106-51 record in 13 seasons at the school and built quite a program in the Duncan area that reloads and "recruits."

This is good news for Presbyterian College, which began a transition to Division I status and agreed to join the Big South Conference earlier this year. As the Blue Hose move toward Division I status, they will play a conference schedule during the 2008-09 school year, but those games will not count toward the league's standings or championships.

The Blue Hose won't be eligible for conference or NCAA championships until 2011.
Look out for the Blue Hose in ’11 but chances are Bentley will be gone by then and off to a bigger school.

A little more on SC Recruiting...

I know some may be growing tired of reading about this subject but it could shape up to be a great year for SC football. Spurrier and Co. are in the process of laying a great foundation for SC football. So here is some more news...

Carlos Dunlap, DE -- rated by everyone in the Top 5 to 10 in the country and listed by most as the number 1 or 2 DE in the nation. Carlos Dunlap Jr. (6-6, 245) of Fort Dorchester canceled a visit to Tennessee (but he may end up visiting at some point) this past weekend and will choose either USC or Florida, his coach said Sunday according to The State paper. I feel our "playing card" in this battle for top talent is 'playing time.' Dunlap could come to SC and be a immediate factor for our defense where if he goes to UF or UT he may have to wait a bit to showcase his talent on the field.

Junior quarterback Jon Richt (6-2, 205) of Athens, Ga., son of Georgia coach Mark Richt, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week he strongly favors Clemson. The Tigers offered in camp last summer.

Good news for Boz and Co.....

Good news for Boz....who was seen driving a golf cart around during the past football season. Don't ask.....but it looks like it will remain legal to drive golf carts around next season. I know everyone was worried....

The SC House has overridden its first veto of the new session that started this past Tuesday, approving a bill that allows golf carts to be driven on Richland County roads.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Todd Rutherford, D-Richland, would allow tailgaters at Williams-Brice Stadium, for instance, to drive a golf cart on main roads within a half mile of the stadium. The carts would be required to use head and tail lights for night driving.

Gov. Mark Sanford vetoed the bill, which only applies to Richland County, in October.
If the Senate follows suit, the bill will become law over Sanford's objection.
