News out of Gamecock Land is not good

Well it looks like the news breaking today is USC TE Weslye Saunders has been suspended indefinately for breaking team rules. Being reported that this has to do with "attitude and work ethic" issues.

Also coming out today is that USC Backup QB Reid McCollum has quit the team and is looking to transfer to a D I-AA school.

Lane Kiffin just upper decked the University of Tennessee

Well, I feel the University of Tennessee gets what it deserves. You hire a used car salesman; you get a used car salesman.

His loud mouth and recruiting violations have caused nothing but trouble in the SEC which has a list of “who’s who” in college football coaching circles. Southern Cal already has a NCAA spotlight on them for some shady practices in the past and now they will have the king of shady practices driving the bus. I wouldn’t be surprised if both UT and Southern Cal are on some kind of probation by the end of 2010.

What will happen to the recruiting class Kiffin has lined up at UT, will some of those kids jump ship and go with him to SoCal?

There is going to be a fall out that could cause Tennessee to fall to the bottom of the SEC for the next couple years. As much as we complain about Spurrier, I am just glad South Carolina has a coach with class.

The kids I feel bad for are Cory Miller and Brandon Willis out of Byrnes HS in South Carolina, who actually enrolled at UT yesterday to start classes for the spring semester. I have a feeling they got a pretty big surprises this evening.

If Tennessee is smart the will go after Skip Holtz, he is due for a chance for the big time stage after leading UConn and ECU. That is if South Florida doesn't hire him first, or will Tommy Bowden beat him to USF? What about David Cutcliffe out of Duke?

I guess we will see how this ‘ripple’ effects the college football landscape. What a crazy off-season to begin the 2010 season. Urban then Leach then USF then Tuberville then Lane….what could be next?

Gamecocks DE Clifton Geathers NFL Bound

With the looming January 15th deadline for juniors to make a decision on "stay or go," it is now offical that USC Gamecocks Defensive End Clifton Geathers has elected to pursue the latter.

Word came today that he is offically going to make the leap after weeks of speculation about him eyeing the NFL. Geathers has the blood-line of a NFL player with his father, uncle and brother all playing in the pro league. So most knew that he would eventually find his way to the big leagues as he has the size and talent.

Early projections has him being taken in the 4th - 7th rounds.

The 6-foot-8, 281-pound Geathers, like most juniors with his talent, have decided to go pro due to the NFL's pending salary cap issues that could change the way rookies are paid. Mainly stating no minimum salary and the "outside" possiblity of a lock-out in 2011. (read this)

Geathers has stated that he is worried about a potential career-threatening injury during his senior season if he was to remain in college. If you are projected in the 1st 3 rounds, there is an insurance policy you can get but Geathers was projected again some where in the 4th to 7th rounds so some anxiety there.

Geathers should make the roster of a NFL team and enjoy success for years to come after finishing the 2009 season with 41 tackles and 3.5 sacks despite missing some time due to a "off the field issue."

Minor setback losing to 'Bama this year but overall was the second best team in the SEC - if not the country.

Les Miles and Crew would love to forget about this season but all in all it was not that bad just not that good in the minds of LSU fans.

Gene Chizik gets the last laugh after this season. Who would have thunk it? And on top of a good season despite many obstackes, he is putting together a good recruiting class.

Did good things down the stretch and with news of Ryan Mallet coming back, their 2010 should be better.

Mark Richt got a 'hot seat' in 2009 and question is can he right the ship going forward?

Gamecocks open SEC season by beating Auburn, 80-71

South Carolina guard Devan Downey scored 33 points as the Gamecocks beat Auburn 80-71 Saturday.

The Tigers (9-7, 0-1 SEC) were led by Brendon Knox, who scored 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting, helping Auburn dominate the points in the paint but it was not enough to beat the chickens.

South Carolina (10-5, 1-0) shot the ball better from outside and used a smothering defense to harass Auburn's guards and cause some easy baskets.

Great win for Carolina to start SEC play and it seems many of the "other" players stepped up nicely to help Devan get the win. The Cocks still got some work to do to improve their game as the SEC slate only gets tougher but nonetheless it was a good win today.

Next up LSU.

Sharrif Floyd Chooses Gators over Gamecocks

Gamecocks lost out on a big time recruit today when DT Sharrif Floyd chose to pursue a college career at the University of Florida over the Gamecocks.

We all knew our chances to land the big guy were slim going into today but there was a outside chance. I guess it was good to at least be considered by a big time recruit like this but would love to start landing some of these guys. Fulton last week, Floyd this week...hope Lattimore bucks the trend and becomes a Gamecock.

Losing Floyd and Fulton hurts "double" due to the fact that South Carolina has to play these teams in the future.

DB Hampton commits to Gamecocks

Remember former Independence star CB Victor Hampton? He was kicked off the team by Patriots coach Tom Knotts last summer, and wound up at Darlington (S.C.) High. There, according to his coaches, he kept his nose clean and played well.

He’s playing in today’s U.S. Army All-American game. And there Hampton (5-10 175) of Darlington announced a commitment to USC. He is listed as a 4 star recruit and 22nd best DB in the nation.

He once was committed to Florida, but today he picked the Gamecocks over Tennessee and North Carolina.

Hampton becomes the 20th commitment for the Gamecocks.

Who ate Garrett Gilberts?

We all waited for the chance to see the top 2 teams in the country battle it out in Pasadena for the BCS National Championship. The match up would have the best running back vs. the best QB in college football. Colt McCoy, a four year starter, never missed a game in his 4 years in Austin. Colt has won more games as a QB then any other quarterback in NCAA history.

On the 5th play of the game, the outcome of the game changed. Texas had two quick scores on the top defense in the country. On a simple QB draw, McCoy was hit in the shoulder by Bama's Marcell Dareus, and ended his night and college career.

Agonizing night for Texas QBs

PASADENA, Calif. – Colt McCoy lined up about 7 yards from his dad, Brad. This was inside the Texas locker room underneath the Rose Bowl bleachers, the Longhorns quarterback missing the biggest game of his career, about to attempt the most important throw of his life.

Colt had the ball and was going to pass it to his dad as a slew of doctors and trainers watched closely. How many times had these two thrown a football back and forth, from their yard in little Tuscola, Texas, to the practice fields of Jim Ned High School, where the dad was the coach and the son was the star?

“Millions,” Colt said. “Millions of times.”

Colt had just lied to the Texas doctors and said that he was capable of returning to the BCS title game against Alabama. A hit by the Tide’s Marcell Dareus, on the fifth play of the game, had sent him to this locker room. He wanted back out there. So he tried to sound convincing despite the fact his arm felt “like a noodle.”

He hadn’t come this far to sit. Colt McCoy was going to lead Texas to the championship. He believed this. He’d always believed this. When he went down, he said, “We were about to dominate.” They weren’t going to lose, not where the Longhorns had last won a championship in 2005, not against a team against whom they’d never lost, certainly not 37-21, as the scoreboard would show after 60 minutes.

Yet on the TV in the corner, he had seen it all fade away in his absence. Alabama was rolling; Texas’ early lead was long gone.

So Colt gripped the ball, stared at his dad and thought, “It’s just a simple throw.” He threw. The ball went soft and wide. Everyone grimaced. “Give it to me again,” Colt demanded. Brad got the ball and gave it back to his son. The next throw was the same, bouncing harmlessly away. “Give it to me again,” Colt said, again. Brad did.

It was the same. It was over. Colt couldn’t throw it 7 yards to his own father. “My arm was dead,” he said. The dad hugged his son. The son broke down and cried.

“There’s no pain on my body,” Colt said later. “If I was a free safety, I’d go out there and make a tackle. I [just] have no strength to throw a football.”

Do you remember Chad Gray?

If the guy above looks familiar, he should. He is former Gamecock basketball player Chad Gray. Who is now the star at Coastal Carolina ranking in the top 10 in points, rebounds and field goal percentage in the Big South Conference.

Chad had his troubles at USC but looks like he has turned his career around at Coastal. Last night he hit the winning basket for the Chanticleers over the UNC Greensboro Bulldogs. He has lead Coastal to first place in the Big South with a 5-0 Conference record and a 15-2 overall record. There only loses have come to the hands of UC Northridge and Duke. I am sure you will hear more about Gray's turnaround at Coastal Carolina this season and we wish him best luck in the future. This is the first Gamecock to leave the university and find stardom at another university. Remember when Stephen McDowell transferred to UT Chattanooga and was SoCon player of the year. Hopefully Chad can have the same success as Stephen this season at Coastal.

Seems they have good team chemistry and are taking care of buisness at 12-2 thus far.

3. Tennessee Volunteers
Well up until the arrests this was a really good team but now questions cloud this team and there outlook for SEC play.

4. Alabama Crimson Tide
The Tide have to be one of the conference's biggest surprises and big fan of Anthony Grant; he will have them making noise in the West.

5. Florida Gators
Got the talent but not the identity yet.

6. Vanderbilt Commodores
The Commodores are doing good things early and have a stud in A. J. Ogilvy but how far can he carry them?

7. Mississippi St. Bulldogs
Don't have many quality wins thus far and not sure what they will do when SEC play begins. I see them hurting as the season goes on.

8. Georgia Bulldogs
Small roster but lots of bite. Beat GT which scores you points in my book.

9. South Carolina Gamecocks
Pains me to have my gamecocks this low....Story thus far is loss of starters Dominique Archie and Mike Holmes. Season started with so much hope and NCAA dreams...now what is reality for the team?

10. Arkansas Razorbacks
This team will not be ranked this low again with Courtney Fortson back soon.

11. LSU Tigers
Who is this team trying to be the LSU tigers? These tigers thus far are very tamed.

Bama vs. Texas

Well this bowl season has not been the best for the SEC so far. Can Alabama bring home the BCS Championship or will it be another disappointing lose for a Conference that has dominated the BCS in the past. Texas didn't look like a national chapionship team the last 2 games of the season but then again Nebraska looked like a team on a mission against Arizona. Granted the PAC-10 might have had the worst bowl season of any conference so it is hard to say how good the Cornhuskers really are. Will Mount Cody have a game like Sue did against Texas in the Big 12 title game? Mack Brown and Nick Saban are both excelant coaches so I have to say this game will come down to can actually move the ball, as both teams have top ranked defenses this year. I am going to go out on a limb and say the first team to score 17 wins this game. The match up to watch is McCoy vs. McClain, as McClain is the leader of the defense but is coming off of a stomach aliment earlier in the week. If McClain is not 100%, I think the advantage is in Texas favor.

USC Gamecocks RB Jarvis Giles will return in '10

Good news gamecocks fans as it was learned yesterday that the "Giles transfer" rumor was just that. Seems he, and most, were highly disappointed with the bowl game performance and nothing should be assumed by his actions in leaving the field to early after the 20-7 loss to UConn.

Jarvis Giles will compete with Kenny Miles and Brian Maddox for the starting job next season (and maybe Lattimore?).

In 2009, he finished the season with 52 carries for 298 yards and one touchdown. He averaged over five yards a carry. He also had ten catches for 26 yards. He is a great back and most likely will factor into the 2010 plans as I am sure a committee approach will be used again in '10.

Gamecocks Moe Brown releases statement concerning June arrest

To follow-up on this story, Gamecocks Moe Brown released the following statement today through his attorney, Lowell E. Bernstein - - -

“In response to numerous media requests, on the morning of June 1, 2009, I was stopped for speeding,” Brown’s statement reads. “During the investigative stop, I voluntarily informed the police officer that I had a registered gun in the vehicle. I was 21 years of age and the legal and registered owner of the pistol. However, I had the gun under my seat and since it was not in the glove box at that time, I was charged with unlawful carrying. After a court hearing approximately one month later, the misdemeanor charge was dismissed and the matter was closed in my mind. This incident occurred during the summer break and it was a private matter for my family and me.”

According to the arrest report Brown was charged with possession of a firearm, speeding and driving without insurance.

South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) records list only the speeding and insurance charges, which are misdemeanors. Brown, who was pulled over by Columbia police, was charged with doing 70 miles per hour in a 35 mile per hour zone.

Under state law it is illegal to carry a gun under a car seat, although having one in a glove compartment, console or trunk is within the law. A judge later dismissed the gun charge.

So it seems he is innocent right? No big deal....

Gamecocks Moe Brown Arrested in June 2009?

Seems Moe Brown, Gamecocks WR, has some more explaining...first there is the news of fighting with coaches and now news of gun charges? Moe, what is up man?

Here is what THE STATE wrote today ---

USC senior receiver and team captain Moe Brown was arrested on a gun charge after being stopped for speeding near campus in June, three months before his final season.

Brown, who played his final game Saturday in a 20-7 loss to Connecticut in the Papajohns.com Bowl, was stopped by Columbia police for doing 70 miles an hour in a 35-mph zone on Blossom Street.

Officers found a black "hi-point" pistol under the passenger’s seat, according to a copy of the incident report obtained by The State.

Brown was charged with possession of a firearm, speeding and driving without insurance, although SLED records show only the speeding and insurance charges -- both misdemeanors.

Highly disappointed further in ya Moe as you were suppose to be a senior leader. He contributed 33 receptions for 491 yards and three touchdowns,but had this arrest come to light earlier would he have been allowed to play? Fortunately for USC, that didn’t happen until Wednesday.

Oh and why are we just finding out about this now? Is there a cover up taking place.......hmmm gotta dig further on this.....stay tuned.....

Steve Spurrier Jr vs Moe Brown?

Well, as if defeat in the bowl game is not enough it seems what the message boards have been saying is "sorta" true. More action off the field of play than what USC gave on the field.

According to THE STATE Sports beat writer, Joe Person, Coach Spurrier Jr and USC WR Moe Brown had a "heated discussion." Person writes -

"...no punches were thrown. The incident supposedly began when Spurrier Jr. approached Brown in the locker room to congratulate him on a good career. But Brown was having none of it, and started yelling at Spurrier Jr., upset that he was not featured more prominently. Brown only had a couple of passes his thrown his way against UConn, one of which he dropped. He finished with one catch for 12 yards against the Huskies, and was USC’s second-leading receiver on the season behind freshman Alshon Jeffery."

Not good that a senior is doing this stuff in the locker room in front of others. Everyone who bleeds garnet and black was upset with the outcome of the game but not the right way to handle yourself Mr. Brown. I wish you the best in the future. Anyone think Spurrier Jr would have won this fight?

Seems the whole team concept has not been bought into by the gamecock players yet which is also so so bad to think about after five years of Spurrier. And to make matters worse, Mr. Person writes about the hours leading up to the game -

"...Spurrier said Garcia and other players hung out in the lobby of the team hotel taking pictures and signing autographs with fans a little longer than Spurrier would have liked."

I feel this is a tell-tell sign of the lack of leadership and USC not taking UConn serious.
Now that Norwood is leaving who is going to step up to be the leader? Coaches can only do so much and it seems the team is too worried about their own self-image to put 'team first.'

I think Spurrier needs to knock some heads around and make these kids realize why they are at USC (student first of course (?)...then WIN some football games!). We need to develop a "team first" attitude this off-season and stop this crap. We need kids on this team that want to win football games at USC and we need these kids to become leaders not just on the football field but examples to the public. So many look up to these knuckle-heads and for them to do stupid sh*t like this is grossly disappointing.

I still feel strongly the best is just around the corner for USC but we keep having dumb things like this spring up that is simply not good for the growth of the program. Off-season job #2 after recruiting is to get the team thinking the right way and if it means some kids not being gamecocks then so be it. Can not wait until Southern Miss as the gamecocks need something to cheer about....

If the Gamecocks can not beat Longwood then who can they beat?

No disrespect to Longwood fans but seriously you guys have only beaten Campbell, Florida Gulf Coast and Virginia-Wise. This is a game that Carolina should (and must) win.

The Longwood Lancers (3-12) will play the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina beginning at 7 p.m. tonight; it will be televised on Fox Sports South TV.

The Gamecocks are 8-5 and have lost three of their past four games. Carolina needs this game for mental reasons and team chemistry issues before SEC play begins against Auburn in less than a week. But USC can not look past Longwood as we saw what happens when the Carolina basketball team does that...see Wofford.

Longwood is lead by two good players -

1. #22 Dana Smith, who averages 15.9 pts, 6.9 rbs and 2.3 asst per game.
2. #04 Antwan Carter, who gets 14.7 pts, 7.1 rbs and leads the team in blocks with 8.

Carolina take note and play those two tight. On top of improved defense against Longwood let's see some blocking out on the boards and improved free throws. Want to see other guys step it up tonight and not the Devan Downey show...even though we here at LOHD love him. Devan spread the ball around and let some of the other guys try their hand at it tonight.

The gamecocks should be able to defend the home turf vs the Lancers tonight and I want to see a 15+ point win.

Longwood 'DYK' - Longwood University is considered to be the "Mother of Sororities," for having the distinction of having more national sororities founded there than any other school, 4. The following national sororities were founded at Longwood: Alpha Sigma Alpha, Sigma Sigma Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha, and Kappa Delta.

Birmingham Bust Bowl

2010 started out with a bang for the Gamecocks. First, the game...ugh. Second, the venue.
Birmingham is a dump people, not sure what the appeal is. Why have a bowl here? And could it be colder for a game? The city was not prepared for the number of people ascending on there city for the bowl game. Legion Field is also a dump and was a nightmare. The stadium is right smack dab in the middle of the Birmingham Ghetto. Again why is this a venue?

I am going to list the highlights of my trip to Birmingham ---

1.) The Gamecock Fans showed up in full force to support what we hoped was a improving football team.

2.) Uconn fans were very nice, not very knowledgeable about college football, but they could sure tell you about the New England Patriots.

3.) Alabama white BBQ sauce. The bartender at Moe's Original was probably the coolest guy I met on the trip. He hooked up our group with a free platter to sample since there were already closed. Thanks again for the hospitality, it was by far the best BBQ I had in Birmingham.

4.) Coming out of Legion field shocked that my car was not broken into and still had all four wheels attached. I hope Birmingham is grateful, as the bowl will keep there city's economy alive for another year.

5.) The bus to Dreamland - which showed up out of nowhere to take us to restaurant from downtown, as the homeless guy gave us pretty bad directions.

6.) Legion Field selling beer at the game - which was awesome until the cops told them to stop serving beers in cans. Of course they were out of cups by the 3rd quarter, so the beer people would just give you cans when the cops were not looking.

I will have to make a list of my disappointments about Birmingham when I have a couple of hours to type them up.....so they tuned.....

Gamecock Recruiting Tidbits

I know most of gamecocks news has involved the recent hiring of a new OL/Run Game Coordinator Shawn Elliott, a "sad sad" bowl showing for the gamecocks and/or USC Forward Mike Holmes getting the boot from the basketball team recently.
But there has been some recent developments on some key Gamecock Football Recruiting Targets and here is the rundown ---

USC's DL target Sharrif Floyd of Philadelphia has taken the Gamecocks out of his final list. Floyd talked to reporters in San Antonio after arriving for the US Army All American Game and said he is down to North Carolina, Florida and Ohio State.
Gamecocks #1 RB target Byrnes RB Marcus Lattimore told reporters at the US Army All Amercian Game that he has dropped Georgia from his list and is down to USC, Penn State, Auburn and Oregon. He will visit USC January 15th and Oregon on the 22nd. He will announce a decision at his church February 2nd. I feel good that Marcus will be wearing garnet & black....
Manning DE Dexter Morant (6-7 235) has been a Georgia commitment since July, but Morant said Thursday he's now planning to take official visits to USC and Clemson in January. USC needs to do all it can to land this guy. He is a big boy that is the type of DE that can cause havoc of a O linemen.
Manning DB John Fulton announced a commitment to Alabama this past Saturday during the Under Armour All American Game in St. Petersburg, FL. Fulton picked the Crimson Tide over USC. Hated to see this but I guess the appeal of 'Bama and depth chart factors caused him to pledge this direction.
Another USC target, wide receiver Kenny Shaw of Orlando, committed to Florida State during the same game.
DL Jeffery Whitaker (6-3 293) of Warner Robins, GA was down for an official visit to USC for January 15th. But in an interview with Scout.com, Whitaker named a final five that did not include the Gamecocks. Whitaker said he's down to Cal, North Carolina, Georgia, Auburn and Miami. Again hate to see this as this guy could be a great run stuffer.
Beaufort LB Justin Parker, who was a lean to USC, is now favoring LSU. Hoping he will change his mind once again as he could be good like a Norwood/Jasper type.
Byrnes DE Brandon Willis told Rivals.com he will choose either North Carolina or UCLA and will announce the winner during the US Army All American Game. He said he contacted Tennessee this past Saturday and formally de-committed. Something tells me the UT scandal played into this a bit.

Gamecocks Hire New Offensive Line Coach - Shawn Elliott

The Head Ball Coach wasted little time in getting in a new offensive line coach, today he gave the job to Appalachian State Offensive Line Coach Shawn Elliott.

Elliot attended Appalachian State University (91-95) and was a four year letterman in football as a defensive end. He is a native of South Carolina out of the Camden area so he knows a thing or two about South Carolina. Elliott replaces Eric Wolford, who accepted the head coaching position at Youngstown State University in December.

There was speculation that Elliott was the top candidate for the job after interviewing last week with Spurrier, who said he would be hire a replacement shortly after the bowl game. Elliott was also spotted at a bowl game practice.

Graduate assistant Andy Boyd was in charge of the offensive line during postseason preparations.

UConn Huskies Defeat the USC Gamecocks in the PapaJohns.com Bowl

Huskies beat Gamecocks 20-7 today

From the start it was evident that the gamecocks were just not ready to play. Not to say that they could not match up with UConn as on paper it played to the Gamecocks strength. UConn however came out the gates with emotion and did all the right things.

The Univ of South Carolina got only 4 first downs the entire first half which says so much about the play of the USC offense. UConn brought a balanced attack and got help from USC's dumb penalties. The gamecocks defense did its best but with no help from the offense it was a hurdle too tall to get over.

The gamecocks got down 13-0 at half and never really got anything going. The offense was flat and dropped too many passes. Seems they abandoned the run too early and Garcia forced some throws that he shouldn't have plus a offensive line that you can tell needs a coach.

I credit UConn as they did their job and never allowed USC to get in sync. I could go on and on about the mistakes and "what if's" but I will stop there and let Spurrier sum it up...

“The first thing I want to do is apologize to about 30,000 Gamecocks who came here to see a football game, and we couldn’t put one on,” he said. “I thought we were ready to play. But obviously our offense was very sad and our defense wasn’t as good as it’s been most of the time. We thoroughly got beat by a better team, a better disciplined team.”

Carolina scored late in game to make it 7-20 with 3:26 to play but it was a wee bit too late. The game simply never played in the favor of the gamecocks and thank you UConn for not running up the score.

I do feel 2010 will be better for Carolina than their PapaJohns.com Bowl performance so don't lose the faith in the gamecocks!

5 keys to a USC Gamecocks win over the UConn Huskies in the PapaJohns.com Bowl

I hope by now you have read the LOHD Preview/Prediction, and now it is time for the "5 keys to a Carolina Win Today"........

1. USC Running Attack and Defense against --- SC must be able to establish its own running game today to open up the passing game and control the tempo of the game today.

On that same note, the USC Defense has to stop the UConn rushing attack as they will try to run 20+ times today. Connecticut boasts a talented tailback duo with the inside-the-tackles power running of Andre Dixon and speedy Jordan Todman, who does his best work around the edges. The tandem combined to average 177 rushing yards per game this season. For Carolina to escape the State of Alabama with a win it must be done by not allowing UConn to have success on the ground.

2. South Carolina's offensive line vs. UConn's pass rush -- UConn knows how to get to the QB, either with pressure from senior DE Lindsey Witten or from multiple blitz packages led by LB Lawerence Wilson. SC was 11th in the SEC and 104th nationally in sacks allowed at almost three per game. If the Gamecocks can't find ways to slow down the Huskies' pass rush, they could be in store for a long afternoon. But they can take some confidence from holding up against Clemson's pass rush, which was tops in the ACC. USC O-line must play big today.

3. South Carolina's passing game vs. UConn's pass defense --- If the Gamecocks can protect QB Stephen Garcia, there will be some opportunities in the passing game. UConn's weakness is its secondary, which has surrendered 245 passing yards per game. That's tantalizing for Garcia and his group of young, talented receivers, led by explosive freshman Alshon Jeffery. But the Huskies try to make up for their lacking pass defense by pressuring the quarterback. UConn ranks 28th in the nation in sacks, recording 2.5 per game. South Carolina is 108th in sacks allowed. Garcia step up today - avoid sacks, play smart, connect and execute...simple stuff right?

4. South Carolina kickoff coverage vs. UConn KOR Jordan Todman and PR Robert McClain --- The Gamecocks have surrendered three kick return touchdowns this season. They need to be careful with Todman, who ranks 10th in the nation with a 26-yard average. McClain aslo can do damage returning punts. He had 15 returns for 222yards, averages 14 per return and has a TD to hang his hat on. USC Coach Shane Beamer will need his boys to make solid tackles and give 100%. Would love to see using the best out there today since it is the last game, no matter what just don't let special teams hurt the chances at a SC win.

5. Last Game, Leave it on the Field --- it is the last game so play 110% today and give the gamecocks seniors the sendoff they deserve!

South Carolina Gamecocks v UConn Huskies PapaJohns.com Bowl Preview / Prediction

South Carolina vs. Connecticut, Papajohns.com Bowl, Jan. 2, Birmingham, Ala.

Well, here we are with the last game of the 2009-2010 football season for the University of South Carolina football team. It has been a interesting “up and down” type season with many storylines and “what if’s.” Go ahead and push everything that has taken place to the side as this game is for all the marbles.

This bowl game is another showcase of the Big East squaring off against the perennially stout SEC. UConn (7-5) earned a berth by winning its final three games, including dramatic victories over Notre Dame and South Florida. South Carolina (7-5) ended a three-game losing streak with an impressive win over Clemson in its season finale. This will be the first meeting between the programs and should be a doozy.

Both teams view this game as being very important for their climb in each of their respected conferences. UConn will be playing with tons of emotion for a number of reasons and must find a way to bottle that up and play ball. For Carolina getting the 8th win is uber-important in the grand scheme of things and for Spurrier to show without a doubt progress is being made. Getting a win in less than 24 hours can really tee some good things up for the future of Carolina Football from energy in the fan-base to recruiting. But before we think about all that there is a football game that must be won.

What you will see in this game is a very talented UConn running game trying to be established in this game early and often versus a very talented gamecocks defense. UConn is weak in the secondary and Carolina must find a way to expose that fact. UConn also at times can have a suspect run defense and Carolina is coming off their best rushing game versus Clemson (223 yards). In many games, UConn plays like it is a shootout (averages 32 points a game) so for Carolina they must get stops on defense (South Carolina is 15th in the nation in total defense and third in the SEC, behind only Florida and Alabama) and play with a ball control mentality. UConn can hurt Carolina if they are able to run and run and run. Plus if UConn can get pressure on USC qb Garcia then it could lead to a long day with a Spurrier visor throw.

Just like last year’s bowl game for Carolina, which did not end well, this game and its’ success for Carolina rests with USC qb Garcia. I feel strongly the SC defense will do its part and slow UConn even if they try to pound it by running the ball. USC has the strength in its secondary to shut UConn down. On the flip side, USC must bring a balanced attack with mistake free play on offense.

Carolina has had time to prepare and will be ready to prove that they are building something special in Columbia – “New Carolina.” I think that Carolina, after settling down early and making 2nd half adjustments, will be in control of the game. Carolina will win this game which will yield that much needed/desired 8th win.

Carolina 31-17. Go Cocks!

USC Gamecocks Forward Mike Holmes booted from Basketball Team

LOHD always knew there was more to this story (i.e fighting) since his eye injury but it seems due to what Coach Horn describes as "internal matters" that the USC forward has been dismissed from the team today.

Holmes played six games this season, then suffered an eye injury due to “horsing around” at home. Since then Holmes was only seen at women’s basketball games, not attending his own team’s games which we questioned awhile back as being very odd.

Holmes averaged 11 points and 4.8 rebounds a game this season in the team's first six games. He has a good academic record so he should be able to transfer to another program and continue his career as a ex-gamecock.

We wish him the best and proud of Coach Horn for making what is a tough decision. The gamecocks were and will be in need of improved inside play. This is another setback for the gamecocks that had high hopes to start the year.

This is the 5th / final installement of "Know your UConn Huskies" and for this one we want to highlight 3 players that get things going for the UConn offense and a corner that Garcia has to watch out for....

Huskie Running Back - Jordan Todman
This 5 foot 9 inch back is averaging 5.1 yards per carry and 96 yards per game. He rushed for 1,152 total yards this season. He touched the ball 226 times and got in the endzone 14 times. Also had 20 catches out of the backfield for 184 yards. And he has 476 KOR yards.

Huskie Running Back - Andre Dixon
Another outstanding back for UConn that had 206 rushing attempts that produced 988 yards this season. He got 13 TDs to go along with his 4.7 yards per carry. He had 1 catch for a TD and 112 rec'vg yards. So Carolina can not relax when Todman is out because this guy can play just as good.

Huskie Punt Return Man and INT Guy - Robert McClain
Let's just say this guy can take it to the house on any given punt return. USC Special Teams Coach better tell the boys that a simple arm tackle will not slow this kid down as you must wrap him up. He had 15 returns for 222yards, averages 14 per return and has a TD to hang his hat on. Oh and he has gotten 4 INTs while manning one of the corners on defense. He has 60 tackles, 4.5 TFL, 1 sack, 1 FF and 3 pass break ups.

Just checked the weather and I am thinking about making a trip to Wally World to pick up some long johns as it looks like it is going to be a pretty cold trip to Alabama.

Former Gamecock Wide Receiver Sidney Rice makes NFL Pro Bowl Roster

Wide receiver Sidney Rice, a Gaffney and Univ of South Carolina product, was named to the NFC Pro Bowl squad when the rosters were released Tuesday evening. Big Congrats!

Rice, in his 3rd NFL season, is having a great year in the NFL and a big reason for this standout year is Brett Favre. They seem to have a good connection on the field.

Rice, who will be a reserve in the game, leads the Vikings with 77 receptions and 1,200 yards along with six touchdowns and is only the fifth Minnesota receiver to post 1,200 receiving yards in a season.

This is the fourth installement of "Know your UConn Huskies" and this time around we want to profile their deep ball threat with the 4.3 speed - meet Mr. Marcus Easley.

Easley, who was a walk-on before this past spring, had 44 catches for 853 yards, 8 touchdowns and averaged 19.4 yards per reception. Not too shabby for the redshirt senior seeing how he did not get looks the first 4 games of the year and for some reason UConn coaches never gave a chance until this season.

The 6-foot-2, 216-pound Easley is someone the USC secondary must be ready for because if not he can easliy burn ya.

This is the third installement of "Know your UConn Huskies" and this time we want to introduce you to a kid in their linebacking corp that must be accounted for on every play... his name is Lawrence Wilson.

He is 6 foot 1 inch and every bit 220 pounds. This redshirt junior is one of the top players at his position (weakside linebacker) in the Big East with a team-leading 136 tackles (11.3 tackles per game), including 10 TFLs, 4 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. Only three players in the FBS averaged more tackles per game than Wilson.

Along with those excellent stats, he also is playing to prove something. His hometown is only a 30-minute drive from Legion Field in Birmingham, and said his father is trying to secure around 40 tickets for family and friends to attend the game.

I know USC has faced many good linebackers this season and this is just yet again another good one they must plan their attack around.

Gamecocks Eric Norwood Selected for Senior Bowl

Congrats to South Carolina linebacker Eric Norwood as he has officially accepted an invitation to the 2010 Senior Bowl. The 2010 Senior Bowl will kick off on January 30th in Mobile’s Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

In addition to his All-American honors, Norwood was a first team All-SEC selection by both the AP and league’s coaches and a finalist for the Butkus and Lombardi Awards. Entering the Gamecocks’ bowl game Norwood is tied for third in the SEC with seven sacks and tied for eighth with 11.5 tackles for a loss. He has two interceptions on the season — one he returned for a touchdown — and leads the team with 11 quarterback hurries.

“I just want to go down there and show what I have done over the course of the last four years at South Carolina,” Norwood said. “I want to show that I can play each linebacker position effectively, whether it’s inside linebacker or outside linebacker; that I am the complete player, the total package.”

All I want for Christmas - The LOHD Gamecocks Wish List

Dear Santa,

I know the economy is down, there is a health care debate and the US is engaged in two "conflicts" abroad so I understand there may be some bigger issues this holiday season. I do however want to issue you the LOHD Christmas List for 2009. Just a few things we Carolina Gamecocks fans want to see achieved or secured in 2010.

So here goes...

A win vs UConn in the PapaJ Bowl to start off 2010 would be really nice as it would shut some of the fair weather gamecock fans up.
Marcus Lattimore would be a nice treat to have going forward. He is the type back that we need that can help us climb the SEC mountain to reach some glory not felt in Columbia before.
Sharrif Floyd would be a nice present to aid in the fight on the defensive line, meaning he is a game changer.
John Fulton could be the next gamecock to go to the NFL from the secondary and continue the "DB U" history that Carolina has.
Justin Parker could step in and help the linebacking corp as it will be a nad bit weaker without Eric Norwood next season.
Coach Horn to get 20 wins this season with the Gamecocks Basketball team and sneak in to the NCAA tourney. USC Women's Hoops to make it to the NCAA tourney also.
Coach Tanner to take the SC Gamecocks Baseball team back to the CWS.
Archie to return to the Gamecocks basketball team for next year after a speedy recovery with that pesky knee issue.
Along with the recruits listed earlier please help convince OL Morgan Moses, TE Clive Walford, WR Sean Tapley and DL Ego Ferguson Jr. that they too need to wear garnet & black next season.
USC football to win at least 8 or 9 games in the regular season next year. Heck a SEC East crown would be a nice stocking stuffer.

So Santa, there is just 10 things to bring us in 2010. Thanks in advance.

Pac 10 vs. Mountain West

Well the bowl season is early, but I think we have learned a lot so far. The Mountain West deserves some credit. After going undefeated last year in the bowl games the Pac 10 has been a joke so far. Oregon State had a chance to represent the PAC 10 in the BCS, got whooped by BYU last night and Utah is making Cal look like Cal Polly Tech in basketball. ESPN has been trying to convince the east coast that the PAC 10 is by far the best conference in football for the past 3 years. Well after watching the past 2 games I am going to have to disagree. The conference that deserves some respect might be the Mountain West. I am not saying that Utah over Alabama last year was a fluke but I think they should deserve a automatic qualifier for the BCS. I have a heard time believing that the Big 10 deserves to have 2 teams in every year. They have a heard enough time winning a bowl game each year, why reward them with 2 BCS games. Just ask Ohio State?

Even Wyoming upsetting Fresno State gave the conference some credit, granted it was a crap bowl that nobody watched outside of the few of use that pretty much watch every football game. The only hope for the PAC 1o this year is for USC to show up against BC as long as they have enough players to play. Who knew paying players with cash, rent money and cars was against the rules. Know your UConn Huskies: DE Lindsey Witten

This is the second installement of "Know your UConn Huskies" and this time we want to introduce you to who the USC O Line will be charged with stopping to save Garcia a headache or two. His name is Lindsey Witten.

Witten is one of the top DE in the nation and most likely will end up in the NFL next year. He is a All Big East Selection and will participate in the East-West Shrine Game on 1/23/10. He also was on the Chuck Bednarik Watch List in 2009. So it is just not LOHD who thinks this guy can play.

In 2009 he logged - 41 tackles, 13 TFLs, 11.5 sacks and 2 forced fumbles. Not too shabby for the 6 foot 5 inch 260 pound end who wears number 9.

This kid must be accounted for on every down and USC may need a RB to help out depending on the play. He is what we like to call a "disrupter." So USC Interim OL Coach Andy Boyd come up with the right strategy to slow this guy down or it could be a long night in the PapaJ Bowl.

As you know the SEC Power Poll is a group of SEC bloggers (List of Bloggers HERE) and the All-SEC Team is chosen by this group of bloggers based on voting.

I get the honor of revealing the winning linebackers......the envelope, please…

The 2009 SEC Power Poll All-SEC Selections at Linebacker are (in order of votes received): Rolando McClain (Alabama), Eric Norwood (South Carolina) and Rennie Curran (Georgia).

Some reasoning on why these 3 are deemed worthy of this award -

1. Rolando McClain, (Alabama)

His laundry list of accomplishments are too lengthy to mention in this post. But the 6 foot 4 inch 260 pound "quarterback" of the 'Bama D is the definition of All-SEC in my book and the others as he was a unanimous selection amongst the voters.

Here is his just a tidbit of his higlights from 2009:
• Midseason Sporting News All-American
• Buktus Award winner
• Semifinalist for the Lombardi Award
• Semifinalist for the Bednarik Award
• Leads team with 66 tackles
• Has 2 interceptions and 7 TFL (-28)
• Five straight games with at least 7 tackles

This his junior year, he has helped the Crimson Tide rank fourth nationally in total defense (242.22 ypg) and second in rush defense (68.22). Oh, and his team is in the national championship game which speaks volumes to his ability and leadership on the 'Bama D.

2. Eric Norwood, (U of South Carolina)

This senior is the key to the SC defense. He is a Walter Camp 1st Team All-American, All SEC selection according to the league's coaches and the AP. Mr. Norwood was also a finalist for the Butkus Award in '09.
In 2009, Norwood had 71 tackles including 49 solo stops. He finished 3rd in the SEC in sacks (7) and is tied for 8th with 11.5 tackles for losses. He had 2 INTs and blocked 3 kicks to boot. He was credited with 11 QB hurries, 3 pass breakups and a fumble recovery. The 6 foot 250 pound Linebacker is Carolina's all-time leader with 43.0 career tackles for loss and is third on the all-time list in sacks with 22.0.

3. Rennie Curran (Georgia Bulldogs)

This future NFL-er was voted First-team All-SEC by the AP and Coaches in 2009, and was also named First-team All-America by CBSSports.com after leading the SEC in tackles this year as a junior. In 2009, he had 116 tackles and of those 59 were solo. So just that number alone says this kid was everyone and had his nose in almost everything the defense was doing on the field. Curran is considered one of the top weakside linebackers of his class, and has been called "the most dominant defensive player in the game" by The Sporting News.

Collegiate Baseball released its preseason poll today and it has USC in its rankings.

USC is ranked 28th in the poll (the poll ranks the top 40 teams). The Gamecocks are coming of a 40 win season and lost in a Regional at East Carolina to end last season. Carolina is one of seven SEC teams ranked in the poll.

Texas, LSU, Virginia, Cal State Fullerton and Arizona State are the top five teams.

The Gamecocks will open the season February 19th vs Duquesne.

Also South Carolina junior right-handed pitcher Sam Dyson earned third-team Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America honors as announced by Collegiate Baseball on Monday afternoon - HERE.

Gamecocks Archie Out for the Year

News broke today that Dominique Archie will have season ending knee surgery. This comes as a surprise as it was originally diagnosed as just a knee sprain. This also brings up some questions as to weather he will pursue a medical hardship for a 6th season of eligibility. Or will Archie just try to get the knee back to playing shape and try the European market.

After the lose to Wofford on Saturday night Carolina is in need of a player that can step up and fill Archie’s shoes. Archie averaged 14.4 points and 6.0 rebounds in five games played this season. He is the most versatile player on the Gamecocks roster and he will be a big loss to the team. There is no one player on the team that can rebound, shoot and score the way Archie did prior to his injury. The Gamecocks have not been the same since they lost him. Hopefully this will motivate some of the younger guys to play hard and make the most of the opportunity to have increased playing time.

Only time will tell what happens this season but all is not lost......or with the injury is the season lost?

Gamecocks Have NO Business Losing to Terriers

First let me say congrats to Wofford.
They outplayed the South Carolina Men's Basketball team especially down the stretch. They outrebounded Carolina and got to the charity stripe more often. Basically it boiled down to the fact that the Terriers came to play and SC didn't bring the energy needed to overcome a good Southern Conference team in Benjamin Johnson Arena.

Wofford earns first victory against South Carolina since 1939 by the score of 68-61. Wofford (6-6) played close the whole way, never trailed by more than four points, and surged ahead for good with about 10 minutes remaining. The Terriers held the Gamecocks without a field goal on seven straight possessions down the stretch to pull away. Wofford outrebounded South Carolina, 43-33, and it was 22-11 on the offensive end.
Carolina could not muster up enough fight to do the little things to get the edge on Wofford. South Carolina had only three field goals (on nine tries) on its final 18 possessions. One of the buckets was a meaningless 3-pointer in the final seconds by Devan Downey, who led the Gamecocks with 17 points but shot only 5-for-14, including 1-for-5 on 3-pointers, and had five turnovers compared to just one assist.

My hope is that Carolina learns from this and don't blame the loss on being down two starters. Losing a game like this is not what we want to see every again. Learn that there are no easy games. Learn that you have to come hungry for a win every game. Learn that you must do the little things like box out, dive for the loose balls and make the extra pass.

I ask that the team look in the mirror and remember how a loss like this tastes. Move on and don't let this hurt worse come Monday night vs Furman. Realize that now there is work to do to get in the "Big Dance" and get to work.

Gamecocks take on Wofford Today in Men's Hoops

The Gamecocks own a 40-18 series advantage over the Terriers, which includes a 78-61 victory over Wofford in the most recent meeting last season.

The Terriers are 5-6 overall, but they are 2-1 at home. Of their six losses this season, four have come by five or fewer points. In the recent victory over Navy, Wofford forced 19 turnovers and earned a 20-9 advantage in points from the foul line. The Terriers are led by Noah Dahlman with 18.3 points and 6 rebounds per game. Dahlman also leads the Southern Conference in scoring.

Wofford’s last win in the series came in 1939 – South Carolina has won 21 straight against the Terriers.

South Carolina has gotten off to a promising start, as seven of the team's nine games have resulted in victory. On Wednesday, the Gamecocks had finally got rolling in the second half in route to a win versus Richmond by a 76-58 final.

Gamecocks should win today vs Woof-ford with balanced scoring and strong defense. Devan and Muldrow should lead the charge today and give Carolina a 14+ pt win.

USC Gamecocks junior safety Chris Culliver expects to return in 2010

Per this article, Chris Culliver says he will complete his final year at Carolina. This is very good news for SC as it means the secondary will be strong in '10.

Gamecocks Backup RB Eric Baker Out with Serious Knee Injury

Bad news out of the Gamecocks practice yesterday, reserve running back Eric Baker hurt his knee in practice Thursday and it looks like he will need surgery. Rumored to be a ACL issue or at very least significant ligament damage. Spurrier seems to think surgery will be required and that would likely cost Baker his 2010 season.

LOHD has always been a big fan of Mr. Baker - here & here - he just got buried in the depth chart. He was rumored to be thinking about a transfer and if that is true this certainly does not help that issue. Eric is a sophomore and does have a redshirt year available. LOHD hopes he bounces back very soon!

The Richmond Spiders gave the Gamecocks all they could handle last night in the Colonial Life Areana. If it wasn't for Spiders guard # 5 David Gonzalvez getting into early foul trouble this game might not have had the same out come. Gonzalvez was a tough match up for the gamecock guards early in the game. Lucky for the Gamecocks Gonzalvez had a couple of touch fouls early in the 1st half that keep him on the bench for long periods of time.

Devon Downey had probably his best game of the season so far. After a rough start Downey took over the game both on offense and defense. Sam Muldrow carried the Gamecocks in the first half. Sam's post play has come a long way from last season. He can also make free throws which is a giant plus, as Carolina seems to struggle in that department just about every year.

Once again Evaldas Baniulis was ice cold from behind the 3 point line, throwing up a couple shots that didn't have a prayer of going in. He did finally hit a three late in the game from the corner in transition.

The most impressive player of the night was Jr college transfer Johndre Jefferson who had a season high 12 points. The General was getting a little worried that we might have wasted a scholarship on Jefferson, but last night he showed intensity, and a knack for getting on the offensive glass and putting back rebounds with some authority.

Does anybody know where Mike Holmes is? He has not been on the bench supporting his team the last 2 games. If you have see Mike please let us know.

Leading up to the Jan. 2nd matchup in the PapaJohns.com Bowl between UConn and Gamecocks, LOHD will ensure you know who it is the Gamecocks will be beating in the Bowl game.

First up, a quick look at who their man under center is....

Well believe it or not, it is a former Notre Dame Quarterback.
UConn Starting QB Zach Frazer left Notre Dame after being told by now former ND Coach Weis that he would finish fourth in the four-man competition to replace Brady Quinn in May 2007. He picked UConn over Cinncy to continue his football career and lead his current team to a win against his former team a few weeks back.

Frazer, a former Elite 11 QB participant, was UConn's starting quarterback to begin the 2009 season, but lost the job to Cody Endres when he hurt his knee. Endres then ends up hurting his left shoulder during a 28-24 loss to Rutgers. Enter the 'Zach Attack' or better known as Zach Frazer.

Here is Zach's stats in 2009 ---

The 6 foot 4 inch QB has passed for 1354 yds, was 107 for 197 with 9 INTs in 7 games. He has been sacked 6 times in '09. Since getting the starting job back after the Rutgers game he is 3-1 with wins vs. ND, Syracuse and USF.

As you can see, UConn has a capable passer to go along with their strong run game so again as LOHD has been saying this is not going to be a walk in the park. It will be a good match-up and one that Carolina will have to be ready to execute.

Abbeville's Gilchrist signs with the Gamecocks

Toquavius Gilchrist signed a letter of intent to play at South Carolina in a Wednesday afternoon ceremony at Abbeville High School via this report.

The 6-foot-3, 230 pounds linebacker has 3 yrs to play D 1 and will do that at Carolina. Gilchrist chose the Gamecocks over offers from Houston, Kansas, Kansas State, North Texas and Toledo. Gilchrist originally committed to Newberry out of high school, but eventually signed with Butler.

Gamecocks Baseball lands 11th Commitment for the Class of 2011

Wade Hampton High School star Kyle Martin becomes the 11th player to say they will be a gamecock in 2011. This comes after the Class of 2010 was solidified.

Martin, who gave his verbal last week, becomes the third player in his class that can both hit and pitch. Martin joins Laurens Academy’s Alex Satterfield and Austin Gambrell from Belton-Honea Path as the two-way players in the class of 2011.

The six-feet-one, 200-pounder is the top first baseman in the state and is known for swinging a big bat both in high school and for his Canes AAU team. He is ranked the No. 8 overall prospect in the state in Diamond Prospect’s summer rankings. A southpaw, Martin becomes the first left-handed pitcher to commit in his class.

Coach Tanner continues to stock the baseball roster with talent year after year. Great to see, go cocks and welcome Mr. Martin.

Gamecocks Geathers to test NFL waters

Being reported that USC junior defensive end Clifton Geathers has decided to test the NFL waters. He will submit paperwork to the draft advisory committee to see where he would be projected to go in the April draft. Unless he is a first or second rounder he expects to return for his junior season. Having said that...LOHD expects him to return and it is best for him to do just that.

Two more current gamecocks may follow suit, this is a rumor, and they are junior defensive back Chris Culliver and possibly junior tight end Weslye Saunders also could submit NFL paperwork.

Why the interest by these juniors and others around the college football circuit? Well, it is due to the fact that the current NFL Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire. The result is a possible new agreement that could see rookie salaries drop in 2011 which means some juniors may think it is best to jump now to the NFL before the current deal expires (i.e $$$).

National Champs

It looks like USC might have played 2 national champs this past season, that is if Alabama can beat Texas in Pasadena on January 7. The other is SC State who one the 2009 SBN Sports Black College National Football Championship yesterday. The bulldogs posted a 10-2 record the season only losing to USC and App State. This is SC States first National Championship since 1981. South Carolina has played the eventual national champion on there regular schedule the last 3 seasons but this might be a first where they have played 2 national champs in one season. Maybe the ACC should look at picking up SC state if they ever decide to add another team.

Gamecocks Eric Norwood is truly a "All-American"

Gamecocks Linebacker Eric Norwood is very fitting of the award of being named a All American by the AP and being named to Sporting News Squad. Not only has Eric Norwood left his mark on the Gamecocks history books on the field (Norwood is Carolina's all-time leader in both sacks (29.0) and tackles for loss (54.5) and is the SEC active leader in both categories), he's also left his mark in the classroom.

Eric Norwood graduated this past weekend from USC with a criminal justice degree in just 3 1/2 years. He is the first in his family to get a college education. Keep in mind this is a guy that was denied admission to USC but was determined. He got in and through that determination has left his mark on Carolina in many ways.

Eric is truly deserving of all the praise he gets as he is a first-class guy. He is the first Gamecock since Ko Simpson (2005) to make a first-team All-America squad, and the first Gamecock to be named to the AP first team since 1984 – when both Del Wilkes and James Seawright made the squad.

The 6′ 1″ Georgia native will play his final game at USC on January 2 in the Papajohns.com Bowl against Connecticut.

YSU Names Eric Wolford Head Coach

The energetic Eric Wolford, a Youngstown native who has been labeled a top recruiter at the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivison level, was named the sixth head coach in school history on Tuesday, YSU President Dr. David C. Sweet announced. Wolford, a graduate of Ursuline High School, takes over his hometown program after building an impressive resume the past 16 years as a collegiate assistant. Of those, 12 have been spent on the FBS level.

"Coach Wolford comes to Youngstown State with an impressive coaching background and we are more than happy to welcome him to our Football Family," Sweet said. "He will represent our university in a first-class manner and is very highly regarded throughout the collegiate ranks. He is a great fit for our community, university and football program."

Wolford has a tremendous background working with some of the most reputable names in college football. As an assistant, he has coached for Steve Spurrier (South Carolina), Ron Zook (Illinois), Mike Stoops (Arizona), Darrell Dickey (North Texas), Dana Dimel (Houston), Jim Leavitt (South Florida) and Bill Snyder (Kansas State).

In each of the past five years, Wolford has helped programs rank in the top 20 nationally in recruiting according to Scout.com. In 2008, Rivals.com labeled him a top-20 FBS National Recruiter.

"We are very excited to have Coach Wolford join the Youngstown State Football Family," YSU Athletics Director Ron Strollo said. "In all of my discussions with him, he has shown a passion to lead our football program and be an outstanding leader for our student-athletes. He has received extremely positive reviews from within the coaching ranks and members of our community. His ability to be a top-notch recruiter will help take our program to level we all can be proud of."

Wolford spent the 2009 season as the running-game coordinator and offensive line coach at South Carolina. The Gamecocks posted a 7-5 mark this past year and will make an appearance in the PapaJohns.com Bowl on Jan. 2 against UConn. USC had four running backs rush for more than 100 yards in a game in 2009 after having just one eclipse the mark in the previous campaign. During the campaign, he had four members of his offensive line make their first career starts. Overall, 10 different players started at least one contest up front, while three started at multiple positions. After joining the staff in January, Wolford showed his talents helping the Gamecocks land the 13th-ranked recruiting class in the nation.

The 38-year-old Wolford spent two seasons at Illinois (2007-08) with Zook before heading to South Carolina. In his two seasons with the Illini, his lines led the Big Ten Conference in rushing (2007) and passing (2008) yards per game. During his two years, Illinois ranked in the top 20 nationally in recruiting. Averaging 269.3 yards in the air, the Illini ranked first in the Big Ten in the category and 19th nationally in 2008. The team finished the season second in the conference in total offense with 438.8 yards per contest, which also ranked 19th in the NCAA. Illinois’ total yards topped 5,000 for just the fourth time in school history and for the second consecutive year.

Wolford helps the Gamecocks post a 7-5 record in 2009. He spent the previous two campaigns at Illinois.In 2007, Illinois finished with a 9-4 overall mark and represented the Big Ten in the Rose Bowl following a 6-2 league mark. His veteran unit led the offense to 3,338 rushing yards, the most in school history, and paved the way for running back Rashard Mendenhall’s record-setting season. The Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Mendenhall broke school records for rushing yards, rushing touchdowns and total scores in a season.

Wolford served as an assistant coach at Arizona from 2004-06, North Texas in 2003, Houston from 2000-02, South Florida from 1996-99, Emporia State in 1995 and at Kansas State in 1994.

He earned a bachelor’s degree in 1994 in social sciences with a focus on monetary policy and banking from KSU. Wolford signed a free-agent contract with the Arizona Cardinals before returning to Manhattan to embark on his coaching career.

A 1989 graduate of Ursuline High School, Wolford earned All-Northeastern Ohio honors in 1988, in addition to being named the defensive player of the year in the Steel Valley Conference. He played both offensive and defensive line helping the Irish to the SVC championship as a senior. In the summer of 2009, he was enshrined into the Ursuline High School Athletics Hall of Fame.

Nice letter from the Head Ball Coach to the Students a few weeks back. I agree with him as the Carolina Student Body did a good job in 2009 getting behind the gamecocks and making playing in Willy B truly a home field advantage for Carolina as they finished 6-1 this season at home. Best home record since 1988.

I want to personally thank you for the super support that you gave our football team this ‘09 season. Shepard Smith, a news anchor with Fox News and an Ole Miss alumnus, said that Williams-Brice was the loudest SEC stadium that he had ever been to after our victory back in October. This past Saturday, you and all of our other great fans made it very difficult for Clemson to hear their signals and try to communicate throughout the entire game.

We won six of seven at home this year, with our only loss to No. 1 Florida, and it was 17-14 in the fourth quarter. We definitely have a big-time home field advantage here at Carolina. This is “Our House!”

Our coaching staff and our players believe there is no better place to play college football than right here in front of our Carolina student body.

King Cry Baby

Well the story of the PC fan that was removed from the game last Saturday against UNC has now made national news.

If you haven't heard or seen the video of Roy "King Tar-Baby" Williams get a Presbyterian College fan thrown out of the game for yelling "Miss it Dion" while he was shooting a free throw. Just like any story there are 2 sides, well Roy isn't saying much about his side of the story. The PC fan Brian King has now come out and said his side of the story. UNC fans will have you believe that he said racial slurs towards Dion and the North Carolina team. They will also have you believe that he was drunk out of his mind.

Per Kings story neither of these comments are true and he is now trying to save face with the media.

This reminds me of a Kentucky game a few years back when our good friend JR heckled Keith Bogans for the entire game. It was awesome, he had Bogans questing every shot he took. If Roy had been the coach that day for Kentucky, he would have probably fought JR in the stands like Ron Artest against the City of Detroit. Granted JR might have had a few beers but that was allowed in the House that Dave "Man Hands" Odom built.

What will come of Roy vs. The Fan? UNC will apologize to Brian King, and Roy will stick to his side of the story. The Wine and Cheese crowd will bitch about how they get no respect and this will just fuel the fire when they visit Cameron Indoor in March.

The best quote from this story might be this one, I was told, 'Because this is Roy's house, and when Roy says you need to go, you go' " King said. "I thought it was sort of amusing."

Spurrier gets extra year on contract

USC Board of Trustees approved a one-year contract extension for Spurrier on Monday, taking him through the 2013 season. His salary will remain $1.75 million. This was mostly done for recruiting purposes but still a deserved move in my eyes.

Coach Steve Spurrier entered the season under a little pressure, but he appears to have the Gamecocks headed in the right direction. At least, the administration thinks so. A contract extension was recommended for Spurrier on Dec. 1 and this was just the formal step of making it offical so no real news here as the gamecock faithful knew this was coming.

Spurrier is 35-27 in five season with the Gamecocks.

The Gamecocks went 7-5 this season and begin practice Tuesday to play Connecticut in the PapaJohns.com Bowl on Jan. 2 in Birmingham, Ala.

Eric Wolford is out at USC.....

Rumors of Eric Wolford becoming the next Head Coach at Youngstown State are getting stronger and seems it is a done deal now that a TV station in the YSU area (WYTV 33) is reporting .....

"Multiple sources close to the YSU program say that Ursuline High School product Eric Wolford is set to be hired as the next head football coach at Youngstown State."

Along with that news source, another - 21 WFMJ- is reporting the same "breaking news" that Wolford will be named YSU coach this week and likely Tuesday. Wolford has a three-year contract with the Gamecocks with two years remaining at $200,000 per year. He is expected to sign a five-year contract with Youngstown State, with the final salary expected to be in the $250,000 range.

Eric Wolford is currently the Running Game Coordinator/Offensive Line Coach at the University of South Carolina and would be sorely missed if this proves true.

I hate to see him leave Carolina as he has improved the line from last year and has a great crop of OL talent coming in to the program next year.

If this is just another rumor then I feel Eric Wolford needs to issue a statement first thing Monday that he intends to stay with Carolina, us fans (and potential recruits) need to know the truth.

Youngstown State after Gamecocks Wolford?

According to this article, it seems that Youngstown State is interested in USC's Offensive line coach/run game coordinator Eric Wolford.

Friday night, word broke that Florida State will hire Arizona defensive coordinator Mark Stoops to replace the retiring Mickey Andrews....then this makes Wolford the number one target for the Penguins right?

I agree with Joe Person at The State, who unearthed this story, that Eric to YSU just doesn't seem like the right move for him. He has tremendous potential as a coach and is making a great impression by helping Spurrier lead the Gamecocks. I feel it would be wise for Eric to stick around a few more years and then leap to the HC game.

Update on USC Recruiting Target Marcus Lattimore

Byrnes RB Lattimore was named SC's Mr. Football for 2009. Lattimore rushed for 1,898 yards and 31 touchdowns this season as he led Byrnes to the 4A state championship game.

The Rebel runningback beat out Berkeley's Bruce Ellington, Daniel's DeAndre Hopkins, Goose Creek's Malcolm Howard and Boiling Springs' Dylan Pace Thompson.

Last week he was also named S.C. Gatorade Player of the Year and was chosen to play on South Carolina's Shrine Bowl team and in the 2010 U.S. Army All-American Game in January.

The last bit of good news to report is that THE Unviersity of South Carolina will get a offical visit from Marcus. Eventhough he has made numerous trips to Columbia and knows the campus very well it is still good to get a offical visit. LOHD and many believe USC is in the lead for him and LOHD feels he will sign but only time will tell.

USC LB Eric Norwood has been selected by the Walter Camp Football Foundation as a All-Amercian.

Great to see much deserved accolades coming Mr.Norwood's way.

He is the first player in school history to earn three straight first-team all-SEC honors and this recent award from the Walter Camp Foundation is icing on the cake.

For 2009, Norwood is tied for third in the SEC with 7.0 sacks this season. He is tied for eighth in the league with 11.5 total tackles for loss. He also leads the team with two interceptions, has recovered a fumble, forced a fumble, leads the team with 11 quarterback hurries and has blocked three kicks. He is the school's all-time leader in career sacks (29.0) and tackles for loss (54.5) and was one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, which recognizes the nation's top linebacker.

Nicolopulos, a TL Hanna football player and Clemson recruit, suffered a stroke this past Wednesday morning at his home before school, and had surgery at AnMed Health Medical Center in Anderson, SC yesterday.

Most in the state connected to sports has heard about this young man, before it was concerning what he did on the football field yet now it is about his new battle off the field.

Gamecocks Darrin Horn to get more Money

Per The State - Coach Horn, who is in the second year of a five-year contract he signed after being hired in April of 2008 is set to get a 300k boost and a possible extenstion.

In his first year, the Gamecocks basketball team went 21-10 (10-6 in the SEC) after consecutive losing years under former coach Dave Odom. This raise increases Horn’s annual salary to $1.1 million but still leaves him in the lower half of the SEC in coaching salary (i.e. bargin).

Some may question the timing of the raise after one season but I think most who truly follow the program know that they have a good coach at Carolina that is going going to do good things.

Need evidence? First year team wins 21 games. First recruiting class is rated in the top 10 by experts.

I stand by my prediction for the season and think the money shelled his way is deserved.

Vikings turn to Brinkley to replace Henderson

As you read in the above article, former Gamecock and Vikings rookie Jasper Brinkley has gotten the starting nod due to the injury of EJ Henderson. Henderson went down with a horrific broken leg against Arizona this past Sunday, Brinkley instantly became the quarterback of the Vikings' base defense for the remainder of the season.

The Vikings traded up in the fifth round of April's draft to get Brinkley, who was second team All-SEC in his final season at South Carolina after missing most of 2007 with a knee injury. At S. Carolina, he started 29 of his 30 games as a Gamecock, racking up 193 tackles (20 for lost yardage), 7.5 sacks, and three interceptions.

Some say a veteran linebacker is needed to run the defense of the 10-2 Vikings football team and due to the injury to EJ some think the Vikings chances of NFL glory are over. But the Vikings team believe that they have themselves the perfect replacement and future defensive quarterback in Jasper. It is time for him to show exactly what Gamecocks fans already know and that he is a special player with huge talent and will get the job done. LOHD wishes Jasper success and EJ a speedy recovery.

The N.C.A.A. is conducting a wide-ranging investigation into the University of Tennessee’s football recruiting practices, according to interviews with several prospects, their family members and high school administrators. A significant part of the investigation is focused on the use of recruiting hostesses who have become folk heroes on Tennessee Internet message boards for their ability to help lure top recruits. ...

Interviews with multiple recruits and their family members revealed that the N.C.A.A. has strong interest in Tennessee’s use of recruiting hostesses, students who are part of a formal group at the university that hosts all manner of prospective students at campus visits, including athletes. It is not clear whether the university sent the hostesses to visit the football players.

In one case, hostesses traveled nearly 200 miles to attend a high school game in South Carolina in which at least three Tennessee recruits were playing.

Marcus Lattimore, a running back who made an unofficial visit to Tennessee but said he would not enroll there, said multiple Tennessee hostesses attended a game at James F. Byrnes High School in Duncan, S.C., in September. He said they brought signs, including one that read, “Come to Tennessee.”

I am sure this will be fun to watch and I am sure this will aid the Gamecocks on the recruiting trail.

According to the article above, Gamecocks Baseball Coaching staff has recieved a verbal commitment from Wando High School freshman Nick Ciuffo. Ciuffo will be the top player in the Class in 2013.

Great news right? Get this....The kid is 14 and has not taken a swing in a varsity game!

Crazy, crazy stuff but I trust Tanner and Chad Holbrook as by reading the article the kid seems to have tons of potential at 6 foot and 180 lbs.

Just goes to show how serious Tanner is about continuing to build the SC program and shows how the game has changed. It will be interesting to see in four years of Nick ends up being a gamecock.

Gamecocks in Lattimore's Top 5

According to this article, RB Marcus Lattimore has ruled out UNC, leaving the star running back with a final five of USC, Auburn, Penn State, Oregon and Georgia.

I like the fact that the Gamecocks are still in the hunt for Marcus, as his services could help the USC offense from the word go....think Knowshon Moreno. He brings a lot to the table and could really help the running game that already has some very talented backs (Miles, Giles, Maddox, Baker) then add him - well USC could be quite the running threat. That equates to opening up the passing game which you know makes Spurrier happy. As you have seen, to be truly successfull in the SEC you got to have a great rushing attack and this could give SC the edge it needs due to the talent assembled on the team already and its youth.

Now you understand why Spurrier is sticking around a few more years? The best is just ahead.

The SEC's 12 coaches laid out their choices for "ALL-SEC" today and a couple fo gamecocks made the list.

Gamecocks LB Eric Norwood made the first team and DE Cliff Matthews made the second team.

Norwood is the first player in school history to earn three straight first-team all-league honors. Norwood is tied for third in the SEC with 7.0 sacks this season. He is tied for eighth in the league with 11.5 total tackles for loss. He also leads the team with two interceptions, has recovered a fumble, forced a fumble, leads the team with 11 quarterback hurries and has blocked three kicks. He is the school's all-time leader in career sacks (29.0) and tackles for loss (54.5) and was one of five finalists for the Butkus Award, which recognizes the nation's top linebacker.

Matthews, a 6-4, 249-pound junior from Cheraw, S.C., registered 44 tackles including 32 solo stops. He also ranked second in the SEC with three fumbles forced and tied for second in the league with three fumble recoveries.

Gamecocks RB Coach Jay Graham in running for Univ of Tennessee Job?

Along with the current USC recruiting coordinator Shane Beamer being a candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Murray State (Source) seems current South Carolina Running Backs Coach/Special Teams Coordinator Jay Graham is being considered for UTs open Running Backs Coach position according to fellow blogger Gates21.

Graham is a former Vol running back that some feel could fill the void left by Eddie Gran, who left to go join Jimb at FSU.

If either were to leave it would be a huge blow to what Spurrier is trying to build at Carolina do more towards their relationships on the recruiting trails. Graham is crucial to getting Marcus Lattimore to Carolina so let's hope both of these don't prove true as both coaches needs to stay at Carolina.

1. Toby Gerhart (Stanford)
He is my favorite due to the fact that he is a blue-collar back. He grinds it out and has gotten over 1700 yards rushing for a team that is not amongst the elite. His statistics compare favorably with several past Heisman-winning running backs and, of course, his total touchdown figure would be among the tops in Heisman history.

2. Mark Ingram (Alabama)
Playing for the No. 1 team is a boon to his candidacy, as is the fact that Alabama has never won a Heisman. Over 1500 yards rushing with the SEC schedule is something to hang your hat on and it is safe to say 'Bama could not do it without him.

3. Colt McCoy (Texas)
While his numbers aren’t as impressive as they were last year, they are within the bounds of past Heisman-winning seasons (though his 27 touchdown passes would be the fewest by a Heisman-winning quarterback since Vinnie Testaverde’s 26 in 1986). The big thing is his leadership in aiding UT to a title run and winning.

Honorable Mention

Ndamukong Suh (Nebraska) – His performance vs. Texas was amazing and he is a beast. For a Defensive lineman there is no better and for a person on defense that can change a game, look no further.

Undefeated SEC Champions. Is there more that needs to be said?

Wow, that was close.

Really disappointed they are going to play Boise. I still don’t think we will get a chance to see if they really are the number 3 team in the country.

Won the civil war. Get to play Ohio State in SoCal.

Gamecocks to take on UConn in PapaJohns.com Bowl

It was reported HERE and HERE earlier today that the PapaJohns.com Bowl (aka Pizza Bowl) has invited the Gamecocks and the UConn Huskies to participate in the 4th annual game that takes place on Jan. 2 in Birmingham, Ala. at 2pm ET.

We all knew that Carolina was heading that direction but the question was "who" they would play...most had rumored that it would be Pitt but they are heading to Charlotte.

USC has been bowl-eligible in each of Steve Spurrier's five seasons and a trip this year is well-deserved for 'da cocks due to a brutal schedule in 2009. South Carolina has won four of its last six bowl games and will be well prepared as they seek their fifth. Huskies are bowl-eligible for third-straight year and are making their fourth bowl appearance in program history. UConn will also come ready to fight and will make this a great game.

UConn and USC, both 7-5, have never met. UConn lost their five games by a combined total of 15 points. So again Gamecocks fans don't think for one second that the Huskies will come in to this game and rollover.

Gamecocks Basketball takes on Clemson Today

Safe to say the score of this game will be more than 34-17 but the need for a Carolina victory is very similar.

The No. 18 Tigers (6-2) will host rival South Carolina on Sunday at 1 p.m. in Littlejohn Coliseum. The South Carolina Gamecocks have a rare opportunity on Sunday afternoon to knock off its first top 25 opponent and get a needed win versus Clemson on the hardcourt after beating them on the football turf. If the Gamecocks are able to travel to Littlejohn Coliseum and sneak away with a victory from the No. 18 Clemson Tigers, Carolina will have handed its bitter enemy what could be its worst weeklong span in history.

The Tigers will face a South Carolina (6-1) team that has been short on bodies early in the season, as senior forward Dominique Archie and junior Mike Holmes have recently fallen out of the lineup. Archie, who averages 14.4 points and six rebounds per game, is out indefinitely following a knee sprain. Meanwhile, Holmes, who averages 11 points per game, is out following eye injury earlier in the week after breaking a bone in his face.

Look for Devan Downey, as the two-time All-SEC point guard, to step up as he must to lead this team while others are down with injuries. Devan is averaging 19 points per game to go along with a team-leading 23 assists and 15 steals. Downey will need a similar performance to what he did last year when he posted a career-high 37 points on the Tigers last year, though South Carolina ultimately fell 98-87 in Columbia.

Last season’s loss was the fifth straight for South Carolina against the Tigers, the past four by an average margin of defeat of more than 15 points.

Horn knows how important it is to beat your rival and look for him to do all he can from the sidelines to will his players to the win.

“I was here for only one of those, so it's hard for me to talk about what's happened throughout the past,” Gamecocks coach Darrin Horn told reporters Friday. “That being said, there's no question we recognize that this is an important game to our fans and to people in this state.
“I don't think there's any doubt that we know it’s important, and we want to win it.”

Wanting to win and doing it are two different things and to get that needed win then Carolina will have to do the following:

1. Get a Early lead or at least hang tough in the 1st half --- if Carolina can get a early lead it will play mental games with the tigers that recently gave up a 23 point lead in the loss to Illinois. Gamecocks must keep the game close and not get desperate.
2. Strong interior play --- CU lives off interior play, getting easy buckets and 2nd chance points. The Gamecocks will have to play big today and limit easy baskets by boxing out and rotating over to help.
3. Play as a unit --- Devan will get points but others must step up today. The gamecocks must out-hustle CU and do all the small things right today to get a 'W'.

I think Carolina can win this game today with a balanced attack and beating the press. Clemson is still hurting over the last loss and now is the perfect time for the Gamecocks to strike.

Pitt loses, Headed to PapaJohns.com Bowl to face S.Carolina?

With a lost today to the Cincy Bearcats by the score of 45-44 and the West Virginia football team taking a bowl invite by the Gator Bowl, it seems the Pitt Panthers are heading to Birmingham.

This would make for a intersting match-up for South Carolina (7-5) in the PapaJohns.com Bowl versus a 9 win Pitt team on Jan. 2 game.

Pitt had their game today in their hands until Tony Pike led Cincinnati on a one-minute, 61-yard strike to tie the game, and Jake Rogers' PAT won it. Basically, a heart breaker for Pitt nation and the result could mean it gets the Big East #4 bowl tie-in and that road leads to Alabama.

I guess we will learn if this match-up get solidified on Sunday so stay tuned...So we got Spurrier v Dave Wannstedt ? Should be a very interesting game if it holds true...

PS -USC Coaching staff please go ahead and begin this weekend on creating ways to slow Pitt RB Dion Lewis as he had 3 TDs and nearly 200yds rushing vs a good Cincy D. The Pitt Offense flows through him.

Gamecocks & Pitt in PapaJohns.com Bowl?

Pitt v USC? Gamecocks v Panthers? Ugh, that actually makes me a little nervous thinking about the 7-5 gamecocks facing a very good Pitt team in the Jan. 2 bowl game.

The Birmingham News reported today that it might not be UConn or South Florida to face South Carolina in the Papajohns.com Bowl as most, including LOHD, figures will play out. It might actually be Pitt that gets to face the gamecocks. Yeap, if the Panthers lose this weekend to the favored & undefeated Cincinnati, Pitt could fall from the BCS glory to Birmingham. That is a big drop but still a chance and a chance that the PapaJ officals are thinking about. Could give Pitt more reason to play hard vs Cinncy?

I much prefer to see SC take on UConn or USF than Pitt. Not sold on this scenario playing out but lots of football to play this weekend and of course bowl situations to be finalized.... Oh the bowl scenario drama.........

Spurrier to get Contract Extension from Gamecocks

Via this - HERE - the Ole Ball Coach said today he expects to soon receive a contract extension that would bring his deal to four years thus to help in recruiting.

Spurrier in his own words...

"I think we're going to announce an extension here in a few days because the head coach needs four years on their contract (for recruiting)," Spurrier said. "Not only who the head coach will be, but who assistants will be."

Makes sense to me and glad to hear it. LOHD has always maintained that Spurrier is doing a good job, despite the records, in building rebuilding the program. He certainly has the program progressing in the right direction and having him down for a full 4 yr term will help him when he goes into the homes of future gamecocks in "selling" the USC program.

I truly feel he has 3-4 years of coaching left in him and during that span will do great things at Carolina.

Gamecocks Bowl Options Down to 3

I don't know about you guys but I am still enjoying the gamecocks win versus clemson....as you know the gamecocks football team has concluded their season and await word from a bowl committee on where their next game will be. LOHD will join the masses and shed light on the subject....

The Liberty and Independence bowls likely will go with Arkansas and Auburn, respectively. Seems our bowl destinations are being narrowed down to a final three - The Chick-fil-A Bowl, The Music City Bowl and The Papa John's Bowl.

I know there is still a lot of football to be played and everyone has a scenario to talk about - Joe Person's from The State and Garnet & Black Attack - and LOHD told you back on Nov 20th that it was down to these three.

Must admit, I thought if we won the CU game then Atlanta would want us and still not understanding why not b/c I really feel the USC faithful would invade Atlanta. I think it simply comes down to business. Meaning the selection cmtes are looking at miles between locations, travel history....heads and beds folks...simple tourism 101.

If the Sugar Bowl will confirm that it will take the loser of Saturday’s Southeastern Conference championship game between No. 1 Florida and No. 2 Alabama, then the other bowls can announce their selections.

Quick Thoughts -

Chick-fil-A Bowl
I would love for Carolina to be at this bowl....But very slim chance of getting the invite to this bowl as rumors around the web is that they have no interest in us coming to Atlanta and seem poised to take the UGa v VT match-up. VT deserves it at 9-3. UGa gets the nod due to location or someone on the cmte had deeper motives. Could see UT sneak in there...oh the drama.

Music City Bowl
Seems UK is the favorite here do to location, traveling history and timing. Makes sense really from the business side but this is where the Gamecocks deserve to be after going 7-5 in 2009. Seems the ACC choice is UNC....I would prefer the 'battle of the Carolinas' over the 'battle of the blues'. Outside chance of UGa landing here is they get snubbed by Atlanta...like USC did.

PapaJ Bowl
USC AD Eric Hyman was on the radio last night and he pretty much stated that this is the most likely place that USC will be going. SC would face the winner of this week’s UConn-South Florida game. Either one would be a good match up and a joy to watch. Everyone knows that USC fans follow their team and have a good record of showing up at bowl games but will they go to this game?

Again there is a lot of football and choices to be made. CU-GT game has some weight on the above so watch that game closely and tune in on Sunday for the Bowl Selection show. Might even get word sooner so stay tuned but you are most likely safe making that hotel reservation in Alabama.

Beat FSU in part of the SEC’s “Beat the crap out of your ACC rival” week.

Survived scare against Auburn. Onto the National Semifinal against Florida.

3. Texas

Defense didn’t look so hot against Texas A&M. Offense and Colt McCoy did, though.

4. TCU

Speaking of offensive outputs. Perhaps we’ll get to see how good they are against one of the big boys in the BCS.

5. Oregon

One more game on the way to the Rose Bowl.

Cincinnati

Close game against bad Illinois team. A win this week against Pitt and Cincy might be Top 5 material.

Still undefeated. I still have my doubts about how good this team actually is. Hopefully they will play someone other than TCU in their bowl game.
